ALPINE, Texas - The UT Dallas baseball team finished a three-game series sweep with a 7-6 victory over Sul Ross State at Kokernot Field Saturday afternoon.
The host Lobos (5-17) scored the first run of the game in the first when third baseman Primo Vasquez knocked in Carsen Thor with a base hit. The Comets (15-7) went up 2-1 in the second when first baseman
Zach Landry led off with base hit and moved to third on a double by
Nico Fernandez.
Josh Johnson plated Landry with grounder and
Brayshon Savage followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Fernandez.
Lucas Rexin led off the top of the third with a base hit and later scored on an
Albert Garza sac fly. UTD added two runs on three hits in the both the fourth and fifth innings to go up 7-1.Â
SRSU cut the deficit to 7-4 in the bottom of the fifth, which included a RBI-double from Peyten Kennard. They tacked on two more runs in the eighth on back-to-back run-scoring singles from Jared Roiz and Alvaro Hernandez.
The Lobos outhit the Comets 13-12 in the game.
Dylan Hugley (4-1) picked up the win, with
Ben Price earning the save. Dawson Beard (0-5) took the loss.
UT Dallas Notes
- Fernandez hit a pair of doubles and scored twice. He now has nine multiple-hit games.
- Landry was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
- Johnson drove in two runs.
- Third baseman
Dylan Bivins also had two hits and drove in a run.
- Rexin went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a triple - his second of the season.
- Hugley struck out four, allowing four runs and nine hits over six innings to move to 4-1 on the season.
- Price picked up his second save of the season, picking up the final out of the game with two outs and two runners on in the ninth.Â
Sul Ross State Notes
- Beard allowed 10 hits, seven runs and struck out three in five innings.
- Kennard and Aaron Morales each recorded a double.
- Estevan Ortiz was 2-for-5 with a run scored.
- Thor went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI.
- Vasquez was 3-for-3 with a run scored, two RBI and a walk.
