UTD Tops Centenary 8-7, Falls to #17 Trinity 1-0

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The UT Dallas baseball team opened its four-game trip to San Antonio with an 8-7 victory over Centenary (La.) and a 1-0 loss to #17 Trinity (Texas) at the TU Baseball Field Friday.

Game One
The Comets (10-4) defeated the Gents (5-6) for the second time this week. Both teams had 13 hits in Friday's contest.

Centenary took an early 1-0 lead in the first until UTD hung six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the third. Senior third baseman Dylan Bivins hit a grand slam over the right field fence as part of the big inning. 

The Gents tacked on another run in the top of the sixth then came up with five more runs on five hits and a walk in the eighth. Grayson Coltharp led the bottom of the eighth off with a walk and was bunted over by Efren Munoz before being lifted for pinch runner Brayshon Savage. After moving to third, Savage scored on a wild pitch while Lucas Rexin walked and scored the go-ahead run on a double by Albert Garza.

Ben Price retired three straight Gents in the ninth to earn the save.

UT Dallas Notes
- Bivins went 2-for-4 with the grand slam - the 38th in program history.
- Catcher Nico Fernadez recorded his sixth two-hit game of the season.
- Garza was 2-for-4 with a double, run scored, RBI, sac bunt and stolen base.
- Rexin scored two runs with two hits, a double and a walk.
- Coltharp also had two hits and a walk.
- Dylan Hugley picked up his second win of the season in relief.
- Jake Jennings retired a pair of batters in the seventh to get out of a two-on, one-out jam.

Centenary Notes
- Jacob Broussard (0-3) took the loss for the Gents.
- Starter Tyler Herrera gave up 12 hits, six runs and two walks over 5.2 innings.
- Jordan Hodges pitched 1.1 scoreless innings.
- Collin Pitts was 3-for-5 at the plate.
- Third baseman Clay Menard was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI and a walk in the leadoff spot.
- First baseman Alex Miller stole a base and hit a double.
- Carson Livesay was 2-for-4 with a run scored, a RBI, a walk and two steals.

Game Two
The host Tigers (7-3) outlasted the Comets in a 1-0 pitchers' duel.

TU starter Joseph Chavana (2-0) struck out eight batters, allowing four hits and four walks over seven innings. Will Hellings fanned three batters and gave up one hit in two innings for his second save.

UTD's Ryan Vera (2-2) allowed just five hits, a walk and the one run while striking out a career-high 11 batters.

The only run in the game came in the fourth when left fielder Pierce Matthews led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a ground ball and scored on a base hit from Cristian Holloway.

UT Dallas Notes
- Vera broke the school record with his 68th career appearance and moved into third on the all-time Comet list with 196 strikeouts.
- Rexin had a base hit and a stolen base.
- Bivins walked and added a hit, as did Coltharp.
- Fernandez and Zach Landry also had singles.
- Luke Finn stole his team-leading seventh base of the season.

Trinity Notes
- Holloway was 2-for-2 with the lone RBI.
- Matthews, Kai Tinker and Nicholas Lazzara each recorded a base hit as well.
- Matthews and Tinker stole a base.
