Vera Breaks Wins Record as UTD Takes Series from UMHB

RICHARDSON, Texas - UT Dallas graduate student Ryan Vera broke the school record for career wins Saturday as the Comets finished the American Southwest Conference series with Mary Hardin-Baylor with a pair of seven-inning victories.

Vera, a left-hander from Friendswood, Texas, threw a gem in the 1-0 shutout of the Cru (20-12, 12-9 ASC). He only allowed five base runners on three hits, a walk and a hit batter, while striking out four. Vera now has 23 career wins, passing former teammate Carter Cochrane (2019-22).

Senior Dylan Hugley also threw a complete game as the Comets (23-9, 13-5 ASC) run-ruled the Cru 12-2 in the finale.

With two series left, UTD sits in second place in the league standings. The top six teams make the ASC Championship Tournament, beginning May 2.

Game 1
The only run of the contest came in the bottom of the third. With one out, left fielder Lucas Rexin reached on an error, stole second, then scored on a base hit to center field from Zach Landry.

The Comets outhit the Cru 6-3. UMHB starter Rahul Champaneri (4-2) allowed five hits, an unearned run and two walks while striking out two.

Game 2
Hugley (7-1) went the distance, allowing just three hits, two runs and three walks with one strikeout.

UTD outhit UMHB 10-3 in the game.

The Comets opened with a four-run bottom of the first on three hits, a hit batter, a sac fly and a passed ball. Junior designated hitter Grayson Coltharp drove in Landry with a bloop single to go up 5-0 in the third.

Both of the Cru's runs came in the fourth, which included a RBI-double from shortstop Kyle Hogwood. The home team put a six-spot on the scoreboard in the fifth, which included a three-run blast over the left field fence from shortstop Efren Munoz. The game ended in the bottom of the seventh when Luke Finn led off with a triple and scored on a base hit from Albert Garza.
