RICHARDSON, Texas - UT Dallas graduate student
Ryan Vera broke the school record for career wins Saturday as the Comets finished the American Southwest Conference series with Mary Hardin-Baylor with a pair of seven-inning victories.
Vera, a left-hander from Friendswood, Texas, threw a gem in the 1-0 shutout of the Cru (20-12, 12-9 ASC). He only allowed five base runners on three hits, a walk and a hit batter, while striking out four. Vera now has 23 career wins, passing former teammate Carter Cochrane (2019-22).Â
Senior
Dylan Hugley also threw a complete game as the Comets (23-9, 13-5 ASC) run-ruled the Cru 12-2 in the finale.
With two series left, UTD sits in second place in the league standings. The top six teams make the ASC Championship Tournament, beginning May 2.
Game 1
The only run of the contest came in the bottom of the third. With one out, left fielder
Lucas Rexin reached on an error, stole second, then scored on a base hit to center field from
Zach Landry.
The Comets outhit the Cru 6-3. UMHB starter Rahul Champaneri (4-2) allowed five hits, an unearned run and two walks while striking out two.Â
Game 2
Hugley (7-1) went the distance, allowing just three hits, two runs and three walks with one strikeout.
UTD outhit UMHB 10-3 in the game.
The Comets opened with a four-run bottom of the first on three hits, a hit batter, a sac fly and a passed ball. Junior designated hitter
Grayson Coltharp drove in Landry with a bloop single to go up 5-0 in the third.
Both of the Cru's runs came in the fourth, which included a RBI-double from shortstop Kyle Hogwood. The home team put a six-spot on the scoreboard in the fifth, which included a three-run blast over the left field fence from shortstop
Efren Munoz. The game ended in the bottom of the seventh when
Luke Finn led off with a triple and scored on a base hit from
Albert Garza.
UT Dallas Notes
- Vera improved to 5-2 on the year. He also holds the UTD career records for appearances (73) and games started (40) and is second with 223 strikeouts.
- Landry was 3-for-5 on the day with two RBI, two runs scored and two walks.
- Garza finished 5-for-7 on Saturday with a double, run scored, RBI and a walk.Â
- Rexin scored in both games and drove in a pair of runs in game two. He also made several fantastic defensive plays in left field.
- Third baseman
Dylan Bivins had a hit in both games, extending his streak to 13 games. He recorded a double, scored twice and was hit twice in the nightcap.
- Coltharp recorded two RBI, including one on a squeeze bunt.Â
- Catcher
Nico Fernandez had a double, RBI, walk and two runs scored in game two.
Mary Hardin-Baylor Notes
- Nicklas Fenner threw a scoreless sixth inning in game one.
- Hogwood had a hit in both games and the only RBI with a double in game two.Â
- Carson Hagan stole two bases and scored in game two.
- Quint Mullen (1-2) took the loss in the finale.
