BELTON, Texas - The UT Dallas women's basketball team came up with another stellar defensive performance, holding off Mary Hardin-Baylor 49-45 at Mayborn Campus Center Thursday night.
The host Cru (14-7) got off to a fast start with a 9-1 lead over the first 7:29 of the contest, but the Comets (15-6) ended the quarter with on a 14-6 run to knot it up 15-15.
UMHB was held scoreless in the second quarter, going 0-for-8 from the field and 0-for-4 with the line with nine turnovers. UTD scored 10 points to take a 25-15 lead into halftime.
Both teams shot 57.1 percent (8-for-14) in the third quarter as the Cru cut the deficit go 41-33 headed into the final period. A three-pointer by UMHB guard Rachel Okoye made it a one-point game with 1:02 to play. Comet forward
Anna Yellen answered with a three-pointer with 36 seconds left for the final 49-45 tally. The Cru missed a pair of three-pointers down the stretch.
For the game, UTD shot 33.3 percent (19-of-57) overall, 7-for-27 from three-point range and 4-for-8 at the line with 36 rebounds, 13 assists, 24 turnovers, two blocks and 12 steals.
UMHB shot 35.4 percent (17-for-48) from the field, 3-for-15 from outside and 8-of-13 at the free throw line with 36 rebounds, 10 assists, 25 turnovers, four blocks and 12 steals.
UT Dallas Notes
- The zero points allowed in the second quarter is the first time a Comet opponent has been shutout in a period in the 11-year history of the four-quarter collegiate game.
- The Comet defense has allowed less than 10 points in a quarter 14 times this season.
- UTD has held opponents to 50 points or less eight times this year, including five of the last six games.
- Yellen led the Comets with 17 points, draining a trio of three-pointers, with three four rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot.

Cierra Trigg tied her season-best with 11 points, also hitting three three-pointers.

Addy Self recorded six points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Jayla Lewis had five points and tied a season-high with five rebounds.
