Softball Sweeps Dallas Christian

RICHARDSON, Texas - The UT Dallas softball team won both games of a double-header against Dallas Christian at UTD Softball Field Wednesday evening. The Comets (6-3) won the the first game 7-6 in walk-off fashion, then defeated the Lady Crusaders (5-9) 12-2 in five innings.

Game 1
UTD jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first. Senior second baseman Mikayla Hoffman opened the inning with a solo home run over the left field fence. Gracelyn Taylor recorded an RBI-single, followed by a Claire Pollack run-scoring double and a sacrifice fly from Cadence Hernandez.

Julissa Amparo doubled in Erin Thibault to put DCC on the board in the second. Cole Johnson led the bottom of the fourth off with a single up the middle, was bunted to second by Hoffman and scored on a Sarah Olenick base hit. 

The Lady Crusaders tied the game at 5-5 with four runs on four hits, two walks and a sac fly in the top of the sixth. Lia Rojas recorded a two-run, pinch hit single to left center as the big hit of the frame. DCC gained its first lead of the contest when Perla Herrera drove in Thibault with a single to right center in the top of the seventh.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Hernandez was hit by a pitch and lifted for pinch runner Evelyn Santos. After a fly out, sophomore center fielder Blair Collier doubled in Santos to tie the game. Hoffman followed with a walk then freshman shortstop Sarah Olenick hit the ball up the middle, plating Collier in the walk-off win.

UTD outhit DCC 10-7 for the game. Erika Fedak (1-0) earned her first collegiate victory in relief, allowing two hits an unearned run and a walk with one strikeout in 1.1 innings. Kelsey Cauthorn (3-4) took the loss, giving up 10 hits, seven runs, five walks and five strikeouts.

Game 2
The nightcap was never in doubt as the Comets cranked out its biggest offensive performance of the season. They outhit DCC 12-5 and took advantage of four errors.

UTD scored five runs on five hits and a pair of walks in the bottom of the first. Catcher Avery Martin came up with a two-run single up the middle during the rally. Two errors led to another run in the second and the Comets capitalized on another error in the third to go up 7-0.

They made the game 12-0 in the fourth, which included a two-run blast to left field off of Hoffman's bat. DCC picked up their ony runs of the game on a two-run single from Dynestee Kanae-Huihui in the top of the fifth.

Freshman Madelyn Denn (5-0) earned the win in relief, while starter Nizhoni Yellow (0-3) took the loss for DCC.

UT Dallas Notes
- Hoffman hit her second and third home runs of the season. She was 3-for-6 on the day with three runs scored, three RBI, two walks and a stolen base.
- Olenick was 3-for-4 with a double and stolen base in game one. She scored twice with another steal in game two.
- Pollack recorded a double in each game.
- Collier was 2-for-3 on the day and scored the game-winning run in the opener.
- Santos was 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored in game two.
- Martin went 2-for-3 with a double and three knocked in during game two. She also threw out the only runner trying to steal.
- In the opener, starting pitcher Allison Koch tied her career-high with six strikeouts over 5.2 innings.
- Denn improved to 5-0 on the year with five strikeouts over three innings, while allowing four hits and two unearned runs.
- Katie Hart started game two and allowed a hit, three walks and struck out one over two scoreless frames.

Dallas Christian Notes
- Amparo was 2-for-4 with a run scored, double and RBI in game one.
- On the day, Herrera, was 2-for-3 with two RBI, two walks and a stolen base.
- Kaylee Brent was 3-for-5 with two walks.
- Thibault scored three times and walked twice in game one.
