TUCSON, Ariz. - Senior starting pitcher
Dylan Collins struck out a career-high 12 batters as the UT Dallas baseball team opened the Tucson Invitational Games with a 13-3, eight-inning victory over Macalester Thursday.
Collins improved to 3-0 with the complete game effort where he allowed five hits and two earned runs without walking anyone.
The Scots (3-6) managed all three of their runs in the top of the second. The Comets (13-1) picked up a pair of runs in the third after a RBI-double from center fielder
Austin Wallace and a run-scoring single by
Lucas Rexin.
UTD exploded for six runs on five hits, two hit batters, a walk and two errors in the fourth. Wallace connected with a two-run single and third baseman
Efren Munoz drove in a run with base hit through the left side in the frame. Rexin singled and scored on a Munoz base hit in the sixth, followed by a two-run double from
Noah Angus to make the game 11-3.
The Comets inflicted the 10-run rule in the bottom of the eighth after
Nico Fernandez led off with a single and scored on a Munoz double.
Jayden Chatman plated Munoz with a base hit up the middle for the final run of the game.
UTD outhit Macalester 18-5.
UT Dallas Notes
- Collins, who tied his longest career outing, retired 15 batters in a row between the second and the seventh.
- Munoz finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored, three RBI and a double. It was Munoz' third four-hit game of the year and he leads the team with seven doubles.
- Rexin was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
- Chatman was 3-for-5 with an RBI-single.
- Right fielder
Trent McCown was also 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.
- Wallace drove in three runs with two hits, a double, and two runs scored.
Macalester Notes
- Shiun Mizuno (0-1) suffered the loss in the start, allowing seven hits, seven runs, one walk and two strikeouts over 3.1 innings.
- Brennan Murley recorded a double.
- Nathan Gumagay had a RBI-triple and scored a run.
- Braden LaChapelle, Connor Davison and Ben Oberdorfer each had a base hit.
