UTD Splits with Alfred State to Wrap up Florida Excursion

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The UT Dallas baseball team split a double-header with Alfred State on the final day of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at Terry Jack Stadium Sunday morning.

The Comets (10-1) took game one 5-1 while the Pioneers (6-4) won the finale 6-2. Both were seven inning contests.

Game 1
ASC scored the first run of the game in the top of the first. Elijah Barinas singled and was knocked in by shortstop Charlie Kiefer's double to left.

With two outs in the bottom of the frame, Trent McCown and Austin Wallace posted back-to-back doubles, plating McCown to tie it up. The Comets put three on the board in the fourth on three hits and an error. Third baseman Efren Munoz had the go-ahead hit with a two-run single down the left field line. UTD picked up the final run in the seventh after a pair of Pioneer errors.

Reliever Kenny Garza (1-0) earned the win in relief while Ethan Vandament picked up the save. Ryan Bailey (2-2) was tagged with he loss. 

UTD outhit ASC 6-3. 

Game 2
The Pioneers scored two in the first, one in the second and three more in the third to take a 6-0 lead.

Both of the Comets' runs came in the top of the sixth. Wallace led off with a double and Nico Fernandez reached on an error. Munoz followed with a single to left, plating Wallace. Fernandez scored on ground ball double play. 

Alfred State outhit UTD 9-6. Christopher Mattoon (2-2) picked up the win while Jake Nicholson (0-1) suffered the loss.

UT Dallas Notes
- The Comets started the season 10-0 before suffering its first loss of the season in game two. It was just the second time in program history UTD started 10-0, tying the 2022 squad for the best start.
- Fernandez was 2-for-3 with a double in game one.
- Munoz had two hits and three RBI on the day. He now has a 14-game hitting streak dating back to 2024.
- Wallace went 3-for-7 with two doubles, three runs scored, a stolen base and a RBI.
- Lucas Rexin was 2-for-4 with a double in game
- Garza threw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief allowing just a walk with one strikeout in game one. He is now tied for seventh in school history with 51 career appearances.
- Vandament's save was his first of the year as he managed to get the final two outs of the game with the bases loaded.
- Anthony France, Marcelo Carrillo II and Jake Jennings combined for four scoreless innings in game two.

Alfred State Notes
- Kiefer was 4-for-6 with two doubles, a home run, four RBI, two runs scored in the series.
- Jordan Hughes was 2-for-3 on two doubles with a run scored in game two.
- Barinas recorded two hits, three runs scored and two walks over both games.
- Mattoon struck out five, allowing six hits, one earned run and a walk to get the win in game two.

UTD will host Arlington Baptist at 2 p.m. Tuesday at UTD Baseball Field.
