RICHARDSON, Texas - The UT Dallas baseball team shutout Mary Hardin-Baylor 17-0 in seven innings in the second game of a double-header at UTD Baseball Field Friday afternoon. The Cru (18-12) took the opener from the Comets (25-4) 7-4 in seven innings.
Friday's nightcap was the second blanking of the series as UTD defeated UMHB 1-0 in 10 innings on Thursday.
Game 1
The Cru outhit the Comets just 9-8 in the opener, but took advantage of two walks and five hit batters.
UMHB started off with five runs on three homers in the top of the first. With two outs, Riley Bender and Shane Melick posted back-to-back solo shots over the fence in left. Catcher Trae Deck III connected on a three-run shot to left field to give the Cru control of the game.
With two outs in the bottom of the second, first baseman
Jayden Chatman singled up the middle and scored on a
Lucas Rexin double to make the score 5-1. John Van Huis drove in Easton Cline in the top of the third to put UMHB up 6-1. Carson Hagan walked and later scored on a Melick sacrifice fly in the sixth for a 7-1 lead.
UTD shortstop
Thomas Soto singled to left to lead off the sixth, then scored on a
Trent McCown double. Catcher
Noah Angus recorded a two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the seventh for the final 7-4 tally.
Cru starter James McGlumphy (4-1) struck out three batters while allowing six hits and two runs over six innings to pick up the win.
Trevor McGrath (4-1) took the loss for the Comets.
Game 2
UTD's bats came alive in game two, as they posted 17 hits, while drawing five walks and being hit five times.
Meanwhile,
Apollo Cassimatis (4-0) went five innings, allowing five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Kasey Klyng and
Kenny Garza threw the final two innings to combine for the team's fourth shutout of the season.
A McCown solo home run set the tone of the game in the bottom of the first. Freshman third baseman
Jackson Montee hit a three-run shot to left center, the first home run of his career, to put the Comets up 2-0 in the second.Â
UTD added 10 runs on nine hits, an error, a walk and two hit batters in the bottom of the fourth. They sent 15 batters to the plate during the big rally. Rexin hit both a three-run home run and a RBI-double in the frame. The Comets added three more runs in the fifth.
UMHB starter Nicklas Fenner (1-2) took the loss, allowing three hits, four runs and three walks with one strikeout over 2.1 innings.
UT Dallas Notes
- In game one, Rexin was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored. He followed by going 2-for-5 with four RBI, home run and a double during the second contest.
- Angus was 2-for-3 with two RBI and the home run in the opener. He also threw out two runners trying to steal.
- McCown hit his team-leading 10th home run of the year.
- Montee was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and five RBI with his first collegiate home run in the nightcap.
- Shortstop
Thomas Soto was also 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored, a RBI, a walk and a was hit by a pitch.
- Catcher
Nico Fernandez was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and his first career stolen base. He also threw out a runner trying to steal.

Albert Garza was 4-for-5 with three batted in during game two.
