ABILENE, Texas - The UT Dallas baseball team completed the four-game series sweep of Hardin-Simmons with a 14-5 victory at Hunter Field Friday afternoon.
The Comets (30-4) posted the ninth 30-win season in program history and have guaranteed the best winning percentage in the 24-year history.
They outhit the Cowboys (7-24) 19-8 in the game, recording six for extra bases.
Second baseman
Albert Garza led off the game with a home run to right field - his third bomb of the series. Jacob Hollingsworth started the second by being hit by a pitch and Jake Trapani doubled, driving in Hollingsworth to tie it up 1-1.
UTD right fielder
Jaeger Self singled and later scored on a
Kole Kinnison sac fly to go up 2-1 in the third. The Cowboys took a 3-2 lead with two runs on two hits and an error in the third.
Shortstop
Thomas Soto was hit by a pitch and scored on a Self single in the fourth.
Nico Fernandez doubled and was knocked in by
Jayden Chatman in the fifth to regain the lead for the Comets.
HSU went up 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth on a Brock Calvillo sacrifice fly and a Hollingsworth base hit. The Comets took the lead for good with three runs on five hits in the sixth.
Lucas Rexin, Fernandez and Chatman each had RBI-singles in the frame.
Rexin had a two-run triple and scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to make the game 10-5.
Austin Wallace drove in Chatman with a sacrifice fly in the eighth and Fernandez connected on a three-run blast to right center in the top of the ninth for the final 14-5 score.
UTD reliever
Derek Brieden (1-0) earned the win, allowing one hit and a walk with two strikeouts over 3.1 innings. Brady Bennett (1-4) took the loss for HSU.
UT Dallas Notes
- Rexin went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, three RBI, a triple and a stolen base.
- Self was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and a double.
- Garza was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, a RBI and two walks.
- Fernandez had three hits, including a home run and a double with four RBI.
- Chatman finished with three hits, including a double, and two RBI.
