LONGVIEW, Texas - For the first time this season, the UT Dallas baseball team dropped back-to-back games, falling to LeTourneau in a double-header at Conrad-Vernon Field Friday afternoon. The host YellowJackets (21-16) won the seven-inning opener 3-2 in walk-off fashion, then defeated the Comets (30-6) 14-10 in game two.
Game 1
UTD struck first, getting on the board in the top of the third. Shortstop
Thomas Soto led off with a walk, moved to third on an
Albert Garza and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Lucas Rexin.
Dane Jones recorded his 16th home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the third to put LeTourneau up 2-1. Comet right fielder
Trent McCown tied it up with his 12th blast of the season over the right center fence in the fifth.
After UTD left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, the YellowJackets loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame and shortstop Austin Wiederhold drove in Cody Brady with a sacrifice fly to win the game.
Reliever Clayton Holt (4-1) earned the win with four strikeouts and allowed two hits, one run and two walks over three innings. Starter Ryan Brewer fanned seven batters and gave up five walks, one hit and a run. Comet starter
Dylan Collins (5-1) took the loss, giving up just five hits, three runs and two walks while striking out four.
Jones was 2-for-3 with the home run and Zach Baker was 2-for-2 with a run scored and a walk.
Garza recorded a double, a walk and a stolen base. McCown tied the school record with his sixth intentional walk of the year.
Austin Wallace drew two walks.
Game 2
The Comets jumped out to an 8-2 lead after the top of the fifth. The YellowJackets cut the deficit to 8-6 in the bottom of the fifth after two-run home runs from Xander Nabors and Isaac Price. They tied it up with a two-run double by Jones in the sixth.
In the seventh, LeTourneau posted six runs on two hits, two walks and two hit batters to take the lead. Comet catcher
Noah Angus hit a two-run home run to left field in the eighth to make it 14-10. UTD brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the top of the ninth, but YellowJacket reliever Zac Schneider picked up the last two outs to earn the save.
Camden Miller (1-0) threw 2.2 innings of relief, allowing two hits and a walk with two strikeouts for the win.
Kenny Garza (1-1) took the loss for UTD.
Marcelo Carrillo II threw a scoreless eighth inning for the Comets.
Kole Knnison was 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, two walks and a double for UT Dallas. Angus hit his third home run of the season.
Albert Garza was 2-for-4 with an RBI and was hit by a pitch twice. Rexin had two hits and drove in two runs as well.
Nabors knocked in four runs with his double and home run. Jones had a two-run double and scored twice. Baker went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.
