MARSHALL, Texas - The UT Dallas baseball team kicked off a four-game series against #19/22 East Texas Baptist with a 9-6 victory at Woods Field Thursday night.
The Comets (21-2) broke open the scoreless contest in the fourth when
Trent McCown drew a walk and scored from first on a double down the right field line by
Kole Kinnison.
Efren Munoz doubled to lead off the fifth and later scored on a
Thomas Soto sacrifice fly to go up 2-0.
The Tigers (15-9) answered with a run in the fifth when former Comet
Luke Finn, now at ETBU as a graduate student, drew a bases-loaded walk, plating William Howard. Kinnison hit a two-run homer to left field in the top of the sixth to give UTD a 4-1 advantage.
ETBU tied it up in the bottom of the frame on four hits, including a two-run double by Hunter Rumachik and an RBI-single from Howard. Munoz led the seventh off with a solo home run to put the Comets up 5-4.Â
Right fielder Luke Bumpus hit a two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh to give the Tigers a 6-5 lead. UTD rallied with four runs on two walks, two hits and an error in the eighth. With the bases loaded center fielder
Austin Wallace hit a single to right field, scoring McCown, then Munoz knocked in
Nico Fernandez with a ground ball.
Jayden Chatman laid down a squeeze bunt to score Fernandez and Munoz scored after an error on a grounder.
UTD senior closer
Jake Jennings came in the bottom of the ninth and shut down ETBU to earn his third save of the year.
UT Dallas Notes
- Jennings posted his ninth scoreless outing of the season. He also moved into a tie for fourth place in school history with his 56th career appearance and a tie for sixth place with his sixth save.
- Junior
Ethan Vandament (1-0) garnered the win in relief, going 1.2 scoreless innings and allowing just a walk and a hit batter.
- Kinnison was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs, three RBI and his first home run of the season. He is now 6-for-7 with four RBI and four runs scored in two games this week.
- Munoz blasted his first homer of the year, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored, a double and two batted in.
- McCown drew three walks and scored three times.
- Soto had a hit, sac fly, RBI and stolen base.
East Texas Baptist Notes
- Bumpus was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBI and the home run.
- Howard was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.
- Rumachik went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two driven in.
- Reliver Carson Speegle (2-1) was tagged with the loss. He allowed five hits, six earned runs and two walks in two innings.
- Nolan Bushko threw two scoreless innings, striking out two with a walk and a hit batter.
