Trevino, McCown Named UTD Athletes of the Year

RICHARDSON, Texas—Senior women's golfer Sofia Trevino and junior baseball player Trent McCown have been named the 2024-25 UT Dallas Student-Athletes of the Year award recipients.

The UTD Student-Athletes of the Year are voted on by the Comet athletics coaching staff and administration and are selected from a group of Most Valuable Players from each of the department's 17 varsity sports. This is the 22nd year of the honor.

Trevino, from The Woodlands, Texas, averaged 76.39 shots per round with a team-leading 39 birdies. She won the Bethany College Classic in Kansas to end the season, placed second at the West Region Invitational and the FST Invitational and helped the Comets to three tournament victories. Trevino was a three-time American Southwest Conference Golfer of the Week in 2024-25 and was inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society. She was a WGCA All-American Honorable Mention as a sophomore and was the ASC Individual Medalist as a junior. Trevino ended her career with a school-record 150 birdies.

"Sofia Trevino exemplifies the ideal student-athlete at UTD," said UTD head golf coach Cole Sondgeroth. "Her dedication on and off the course is unparalleled—she consistently gives 100%, even when no one is watching. After a challenging performance at the Southwestern event, she returned to campus, worked diligently, and concluded her collegiate career with both an individual and team victory. What truly sets Sofia apart is her selflessness; she prioritizes the team's success over individual accolades. Her unwavering commitment makes her the perfect recipient of the Female Student-Athlete of the Year award."

Graduate student basketball player Anna Yellen was second in voting, followed by soccer player Jade Press. Other nominees for the women were freshman Rowen Hughes (track & field/soccer), senior Addison Caddell (softball), freshman Alina Strickler (volleyball), sophomore Chloe O'Connor (tennis) and freshman Bharvi Varu (cross country).

McCown, of Wylie, Texas, hit .418 (51-for-122) with 52 runs scored, 12 doubles, 13 home runs, 45 runs batted in and 38 walks in 36 games while playing right field and first base. He broke the school record with an .836 slugging percentage and had the second-best on-base percentage at .574. McCown tied the school with eight RBI in a game by going 4-for-5 with a double and a home run against Macalester on March 22. He was named the ASC Hitter of the Week on February 10 and selected to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week on February 19. McCown led the Comets to 32-6 record - the best-winning percentage in program history (.842).

"Trent McCown's performance this season has been nothing short of exceptional," said UTD head baseball coach Shane Shewmake. "He's demonstrated an elite ability to drive the ball and change the course of a game with a single swing. His performance this season ranks among the best in UT Dallas history, solidifying his place as one of the best hitters we've had."

Graduate student golfer Parker McCurdy was the runner-up in voting, followed by senior soccer player Riley O'Donnell. Other nominees for the men were senior Nick Donnelly (basketball), sophomore Frank Douglas (cross country), sophomore Zachary Carroll (track & field) and junior Benjamin Dubois (tennis).

Trevino is the third consecutive women's golfer to win the award. McCown is the sixth baseball player.
