ALPINE, Texas - The UT Dallas softball team won its first two Lone Star Conference contests dominantly, defeating Sul Ross State 10-3 and 15-6 at Lobo Field Friday evening.
Game OneÂ
The Comets (4-2, 2-0 LSC) took advantage of two errors by the Lobos (2-6, 0-2 LSC), scoring nine unearned runs. UTD also drew seven walks and outhit SRSU 9-7.Â
An error with two outs and two runners on in the top of the second led to a six-run inning. Freshman left fielder
Rachel Wallace recorded a two-run single and catcher
Avery Martin tripled and knocked in two during the frame.
The Lobos managed three runs in the bottom of the second, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Samantha Bustos.
Sophomore shortstop
Sarah Olenick led the third off with a walk, stole second and scored after a
Brooke Bouldin double.
Wallace drove in two more runs with a double and
Julia Maniscalco followed with a double, scoring Wallace in the top of the seventh.
Junior
Allison Koch (2-0) tied a career-high with seven strikeouts in the complete game victory.
Game Two
UTD continued the big offensive day by outhitting SRSU 17-8 in the second game.Â
The Comets started with three runs in the first, including a two-run home run to left field by sophomore
Audrey Messer. The Lobos managed a run in the first and second to make it 3-2.
UTD took control with five runs in the fourth. Two errors in the inning led to the first two runs, followed by an RBI-double by Maniscalco and a run-scoring single by Martin.
Maniscalco drove in two more runs in the fifth to make the game 10-2. Baylie Savage answered in the bottom of the frame with a two-run blast to right field.Â
Another error gave UTD an 11-4 advantage in the sixth. Kaitlynn Frakes hit a two-run homer for SRSU in the bottom of the sixth.Â
Wallace and pinch hitter
Isabella Quave each hit two-run homers in the seventh for the final 15-6 tally.
Josie Karpinski (1-1) earned the win with four innings of relief work for the Comets.
UT Dallas Performances
- Senior second baseman
Claire Pollack had a hit in both games, extending her streak to 14 games dating back to last year. She scored six times on the day, including four in game two, and moved into a tie for eighth on the Comets' career list with 85.Â
- Wallace went 5-for-9 with six RBI, four runs scored, a double and her first career home run.
- Maniscalco had five hits with three doubles, and four driven in.
- Center fielder
Chloe Grimmer also came up with three hits, three runs scored and three steals on the day.
Sul Ross State Performances
- Jenna Leanos recorded four hits on the day. She struck out seven, but took the complete game loss in the nightcap.
- Savage was 2-for-2 with a double, home run, two RBI and two walks in game two.
- Frakes drove in three runs in the second game.
