SILVER CITY, N.M. - The UT Dallas softball team lost both games of a Lone Star Conference doubleheader to Western New Mexico at The Yard Sunday afternoon. The Comets (4-4, 2-2 LSC) lost the opener 11-2 in five innings, and the Mustangs (6-6, 2-0 LSC) took the second game 3-2.
Game One
Abbi Markus homered to center field to put WNMU on the board in the first inning.
UTD tied it in the top of the second when senior catcher
Avery Martin led off with a triple and scored on a failed pick-off attempt.
Audrey Messer walked and scored on a
Sophia Martinez double to give the Comets the lead.
Lauryn Carbajal drove in Hannah Martinez on a triple to left field. Addisen Byers followed with a home run, giving the Mustangs a 4-2 lead in the second. They scored five runs on four hits in the fourth. Carbajal added a two-run double, and Byers connected on her second home run in the inning.
Jenna Peters recorded another two-run home run to center field in the fourth for the final 11-2 score. The Mustangs outhit the Comets 9-2 with four home runs.
Game Two
UTD freshman
Mere Cavazos recorded a gutsy pitching performance, limiting the WNMU offense to one run through the first six innings.
Markus led the bottom of the seventh off by being hit by a pitch and was lifted for pinch runner Isabelle Soto. After an out, Jenna Peters singled and was run for by Aleeya Barwick. Marleigh Manns drew a walk to load the bases.
Antonya Lucero singled to left field, scoring Soto to tie the game at 2-2. Martinez was hit by a pitch, plating Barwick for the game-winning run.
Ciara Spencer led off the first with a walk and scored on a Manns base hit to give the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead.
The game remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth. Pinch hitter
Julia Guerrero was hit by a pitch and
Sarah Olenick followed with a walk. After a ground ball, center fielder
Chloe Grimmer hit an infield single, scoring Guerrero and Olenick to give the Comets a 2-1 advantage.
WNMU outhit the UTD 9-7.
UT Dallas Performances
- Martin went 3-for-6 with a run scored and a triple.
- Martinez and Maniscalco each recorded a double.
- Cavazos (0-2) struck out five in the losing effort in game two.
Western New Mexico Performances
- Byers was 2-for-2 with the two home runs and four RBI in game one.
- Carbajal was 4-for-5 with a double and triple.
- Peters went 4-for-7 with three batted in.

UTD will be off until February 27 when they host Eastern New Mexico.
