SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The UT Dallas baseball team lost both games of Sunday's doubleheader to St. Mary's at Dickson Stadium. The Comets (6-4 Lone Star Conference) dropped game one 9-6 in seven innings, and the Rattlers (9-1 LSC) won game two 13-7.
Game One
Despite outhitting StMU 11-7 in the opener, UTD walked nine batters and committed two errors.
The Rattlers opened the scoring with a run in the first after an error and scored two more in the second.
The Comets went up 6-3 in the top of the fourth on seven hits. Left fielder
Chris Benavidez led off with a home run to left field, his first of the season. Sophomore designated hitter
Kole Kinnison also had a two-run single up the middle in the frame.
The Rattlers drew seven walks in the bottom of the fourth. Along with a two-run base hit by Rob Gonzalez, the home team took an 8-6 lead. They tacked on one more run in the fifth.
Game Two
UTD opened the game with two runs in the first. First baseman
Korson Hastings drew a bases-loaded walk and catcher
Nico Fernandez drove in a run with a single while the bases were full.
Ryan Alaniz hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to give StMUÂ a 3-2 lead. Blake Allen hit a two-run bomb and Garrett Brooks had a solo shot in the second to make the game 6-2.
Shortstop
Jake Amoroso led the top of the fifth off with a home run to right field. Kinnison singled and was doubled in by
Trent McCown.Â
Alaniz added another RBI with a double, followed by an Ethan Hughes home run over the center field fence to give the Rattlers a 9-4 advantage in the fifth. Brooks walked and scored on a Jacob King triple in the sixth. The Rattlers went on to scored three more times in the inning.
Hastings singled and scored on an
Alex Miller double in the top of the seventh. Fernandez added a solo home run in the ninth.
Peyton Peoples doubled and scored on a
Gavin Barker double for the final 13-7 tally.
UTD outhit StMU 14-11, but walked seven batters.
UT Dallas Performances
- Kinnison was red-hot at the plate, going 7-for-9 with three RBI and two runs scored.
- Hastings went 4-for-6 with two RBI and three walks on the day.
- Benavidez, Amoroso and Fernandez each hit their first home runs of the season.
- Freshman
Gavin Barker extended his hitting streak to six games.
- McCown, Fernandez and Amoroso each had two hits in the second game.
- Junior
Kole Allen made his Comet debut on the mound and struck out two batters in two perfect innings to close out the finale.
St. Mary's Performances
- Despite allowing 10 hits and six runs over four innings, Eric Tennery (3-0) earned the game one win with five strikeouts.
- Derek Maples recorded the three-inning save.
- Alaniz was 2-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, a double and a home run in game two.
- King hit a double and a triple in the nightcap.
- Gabe Cook had the win with three innings of relief in the second game.

UTD will take on Eastern New Mexico in a four-game series at home beginning Friday at 1 p.m.
