Comets Test #3 Lady Buffs

RICHARDSON, Texas - The UT Dallas softball team lost both games of a Lone Star Conference doubleheader to #3 West Texas A&M at UTD Softball Field Sunday afternoon, but not without putting up a fight. The Comets (5-7, 3-5 LSC) brought the potential tying run up to the plate in a 6-4 game one defeat. The Lady Buffs (17-3, 7-1 LSC) won the second contest 12-4 in five innings.

Game One
- Cadence Colborn hit a solo home run to lead off the second for WT.
- Later in the inning, Jordyn De Los Santos recorded a three-run double. 
- Trinity Kuntz hit a sacrifice fly that scored Melanie Baldwin to give the Lady Buffs a 5-0 advantage in the fourth.
- De Los Santos drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to go up 6-0.
- In the bottom of the fifth, freshman catcher Haley Whitefield connected on two-run homer deep to left to put the Comets on the board.
- McKenna Holm recorded an RBI-single and Whitefield hit a sac fly to make the game 6-4 in the sixth.
- UTD threatened in the bottom of the seventh with Avery Martin leading off with a base hit. 
- After a line drive that led to a double play, sophomore shortstop Sarah Olenick reached on an infield single, bringing the tying run up to the plate.
- WT pitcher Laci Peskey induced a ground-out to end the game.
- The Lady Buffs outhit the Comets 11-9, with both teams recording three extra base hits.

UT Dallas in Game One
- Whitefield was 2-for-3 with the home run, a double and three RBI.
- Martin, Olenick and Clare Pollack each went 2-for-4.
- Junior first baseman Cadence Hernandez was hit by a pitch twice and moved into fifth on the UTD career list with 11.
- Freshman Mere Cavazos (0-4) started and suffered the loss in the circle.

West Texas A&M in Game One
- Brooke Janning (7-1) earned the win, allowing six hits, four runs, a walk and hit three batters with seven strikeouts over five innings.
- Peskey allowed three hits and a walk with one strikeout in the two-inning save.
- De Los Santos was 2-for-4 with four RBI, a double and a walk.
- Colborn went 2-for-4 with the home run.

Game Two
- The Lady Buffs opened the game with four runs in the first, which included a solo home run by catcher Trinity Kuntz.
- They went up 9-0 with five runs in the second.
- Olenick recorded a solo home run and McKenna Holm hit a two-run blast to make the game 9-3 in the bottom of the second. 
- In the third, Whitefield singled and later scored on an Olenick sacrifice fly.
- WT added two more runs in the fourth.
- The final run of the game came in the top of the fifth.

Comets in Game Two
- Olenick and Holm each drove in two runs and hit a home run.
- Whitefield added another hit.
- Pollack recorded a single and tied for ninth on UTD's career list with 136 hits.
- Megan Stulc (1-1)  started and took the loss.

Lady Buffs in Game Two
- Raegan Sucher (3-0) allowed four hits, four runs and three walks with three strikeouts over four innings in the win.
- Ava Sharp threw a scoreless fifth.
- Janning was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
- Claborn was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two walks and two steals.

Up Next
The Comets will return to action in a non-conference home doublheader against Dallas Christian on March 11.
