LAREDO, Texas - The UT Dallas baseball team defeated Texas A&M International 12-4 in the Lone Star Conference series opener at Jorge Haynes Field on Friday.
The Comets (23-8 LSC) have now won six games in a row and 11 out of the last 12. They are tied for first atop the LSC standings with UT Tyler.Â
Game Highlights
- The visiting team continued their offensive dominance, outhitting the Dustdevils (11-20 LSC) 15-6.Â
- Senior catcher
Nico Fernandez singled in
Albert Garza in the top of the third for the first run of the game. Shortstop
Jake Amoroso followed with a two-run triple to give the Comets a 3-0 advantage.
- Freshman third baseman
Gavin Barker singled and later scored on a Fernandez sac fly to make the game 4-0 in the fourth.
- Two errors and three hits in the bottom of the fourth led to three runs for TAMIU.Â

Chris Benavidez singled in
Trent McCown in the fifth and Barker drew a bases-loaded walk later in the frame for a 6-3 lead.
- The Comets went up 8-3 in the sixth on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Benavidez.Â
- Eddie Saenz led the bottom of the eighth off with a walk and later scored on a Jesus Sosa single to left for the Dustdevils.
- UTD tacked on four more runs in the top of the ninth which featured RBI-singles from Garza and McCown and a two-run double from
Kole Kinnison.
UT Dallas Performances
- Garza drew three walks, stole a base and scored twice.
- Fernandez had a sac fly, single, two RBI, walk and three runs scored.
- Kinnison doubled, singled, drove in two runs and scored thre etimes.
- McCown and
Austin Wallace each had two hits.
- Benavidez had a pair of RBI on two hits.
- Amroso was 3-for-5 with a triple, walk and two RBI.
- Starting pitcher
Seth Taylor (4-1) earned the victory, allowing three runs, three hits and two walks with three strikeouts over six innings.

Kole Allen also had scoreless appearances.
Texas A&M International Performances
- AJ Sanchez (1-1) started and lasted four innings. He gave up 12 hits, six runs and three walks while fanning three.
- Saenz recorded a double, two runs, two walks and a stolen base.
- Sosa drove in two runs.
- Jacob Angell and Derek Garcia each stole a base.
