Comets and Javelinas Split on Saturday

KINGSVILLE, Texas - The UT Dallas baseball team split a Lone Star Conference doubleheader with Texas A&M-Kingsville at Nolan Ryan Field on Saturday. The Comets (29-12 LSC) won the opener 14-7 in eight innings, while the Javelinas (22-19 LSC) took the nightcap 6-3.

Game One Highlights
- UTD got on the board with a run in the first inning.
- Eric Martinez hit a two-run double to right-center to put TAMUK up 2-1 in the second.
- The Comets regained a 5-2 lead in the third, which included a Chris Benavidez two-run homer to left field.
- The Javelinas tied it up on a three-run blast from Fisher Davis in the bottom of the fourth.
- UTD regained the lead with an RBI-double from Jake Amoroso and a run-scoring single by Alex Miller.
- Kingsville tied the game at 7-7 after two errors led to a pair of runs in the sixth.
- The Comets exploded for seven runs on five hits in the eighth, which included a grand slam from Kole Kinnison, followed by a solo shot by Trent McCown.

UT Dallas in Game One
- Kinnison's home run was his sixth of the year and the 42nd grand slam in program history. He drove in five runs, scored twice and drew a pair of walks.
- Benavdiez went 2-for-4 and hit his seventh homer of the season.
- McCown had two hits, including his league-leading 14th homer of the year.
- Second baseman Albert Garza was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a double and a stolen base.
- Amoroso connected on a pair of doubles and scored twice.
- Tag Pacot (1-3) earned the win with three strikeouts and one hit allowed in 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Texas A&M-Kingsville in Game One 
- Clark Scallon (2-1) allowed six earned runs, one walk and five hits in the loss.
- Davis hit the three-run homer, scored twice and drew a walk.
- Braden Duff was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a stolen base.
- Martinez and Cade Minus each doubled.

Game Two Highlights
- The Javelinas outhit the Comets 9-8.
- Nick Reyes tripled and scored on a Minus single in the bottom of the first to give TAMUK the early lead.
- Amoroso doubled and was knocked in by Miller on a base hit to tie the game 1-1 in the second.
- The Javs gained control of the game with five runs on four hits in the second. Cash Benavidez hit a three-run homer and Minus had a two-run shot in the inning.
- Kinnison led the sixth off with a base hit and later scored on an Amoroso single to left.
- The final run of the game came in the top of the seventh when Gavin Barker drew a walk and scored on a Fernandez triple.

Comets in Game Two
- Garza went 3-for-3.
- Amoroso added two more hits with a double and RBI.
- Fernandez' triple was the sixth of his career.
- Henry Warta (1-2) started and took the loss on the mound.
- AJ Ripley and Luke Nielsen combined for 4.1 scoreless innings.

Javelinas in Game Two
- Tyler Schumann (5-1) struck out eight while giving up eight hits, three runs and three walks in the win.
- James Placke got the final out to earn his first save of the year.
- Munus was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a home run.
- Catcher Jayden Martinez was 2-for-2.
- Reyes scored twice, walked and tripled.

The series finale between UTD and TAMUK will start at 1 p.m. Sunday.
