UTD Takes Control of Series with 20-4 Victory

ALPINE, Texas - After splitting the first two contests of a four-game Lone Star Conference series, the UT Dallas baseball team exploded for a 20-4, seven-inning victory in Saturday's nightcap at Kokernot Field. 

The Comets (32-13 LSC) outhit the Lobos (4-41 LSC) 18-8 and outdrew them in walks, 9-4.

Game Highlights
- Second baseman Albert Garza led the game off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and later scored on a Kole Kinnison sacrifice fly for the early 1-0 lead.
- SRSU tied the game in the bottom of the first when Leo Salas singled and scored on a Jayden Hernandez base hit to right.
- The Lobos went up 2-1 in the second. Alfonso Lopez was hit by a pitch, stole second and eventually scored on a Salas sac fly.
- The Comets regained the lead in the third after a Chris Benavidez RBI-double and another Kinnison sac fly.
- Jared Salinas led the bottom of the fourth off with an inside-the-park home run to tie it up at 3-3.
- UTD would score the next 17 runs, starting with five in the fifth. The inning included a two-run homer from Benavidez.
- The Comets went up 15-3 in the sixth and added five more runs in the seventh.
- Max Wiggins hit a solo home run for the Lobos in the bottom of the seventh for the final 20-4 tally.

UT Dallas Performances
- Benavidez went 5-for-5 with six RBI, three runs scored, a walk, a double and a home run. He is the 29th Comet in program history to have five hits in a game.
- Garza was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a stolen base.
- Nico Fernandez drew four walks, scored and recorded an RBI.
- Kinnison knocked in three runs and scored twice with a triple and a pair of sac flies. He now has 13 sacrifices on the season.
- Miller went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a pair of runs batted in and two doubles.
- Shortstop Jake Amoroso doubled, scored twice, walked twice and had an RBI.
- Jackson Montee was 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs.
- Peyton Peoples also had two hits, two runs, an RBI and a walk.
- Gavin Hickman (3-1) earned the win in relief. He struck out three while allowing three hits, one run and two walks.
- Kole Allen threw one scoreless inning.

Sul Ross State Performances
- Gage Cobb (0-7) started and took the loss. He lasted 4.1 frames, allowing eight hits, eight runs and two walks with four strikeouts.
- Garrett Luke threw a scoreless seventh.
- Hernandez went 2-for-4 with a RBI.
- Salinas had the solo home run.
- Alfonso Lopez walked twice, scored, stole a base and was hit by a pitch.

The final game of the series will start at noon Sunday.
