Former Comet standout Jared Fleming became the third head coach men's basketball coach in UT Dallas history in July 2023 after serving the previous eight years as an assistant coach.
In his first season at the helm, Fleming guided the Comets to an American Southwest Championship and the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Tournament. The Comets went 19-10 overall and 12-4 in league play, tying for the regular season title. Fleming has won the ASC title as a player, assistant coach and head coach.Â
The Comets went 15-10 as an NCAA Division II Independent in 2024-25, giving Fleming a career 34-20 record (.630).
UTD ranked 16th in the nation in assists per game (17.5) and 21st in offensive rebounds per contest (13.93) in 2023-24. Fleming coached four All-Conference selections, including the ASC Defensive Player of the Year.
In eight seasons as an assistant, Fleming has helped the Comets go 139-64, win the ASCÂ title in 2019 and take back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament. He has coached one All-American, four All-District/Region selections and seven All-Conference picks.
Fleming returned to UTD after spending one season as assistant men's basketball coach at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas. While with the Mountaineers, Fleming also served as the head coach of the school's junior varsity squad. Prior to Schreiner, he spent two seasons as an assistant at Franklin College in Indiana.
Â
A native of Hawkins, Fleming played four seasons under Terry Butterfield from 2006-10 and was a part of a Comet squad that reached the NCAA Division III "Elite 8" in 2009 as a junior. That squad was inducted into the UTD Athletics Hall of Honor in 2014. As a senior, Fleming helped the Comets to another NCAA Championship appearance, leading the squad to a "Sweet 16" trip.
Â
Fleming helped UTD to a pair of ASC regular season titles and one conference championship during his playing career. He was named honorable mention All-ASC as a senior and was listed on the ASC's All-Tournament Team. In addition, he was a three-time Academic All-ASC pick for the Comets. Fleming earned his bachelor's degree from UTD in Business Administration in 2009 and collected his master's degree in Finance in 2010 while serving as a graduate assistant for the Comets.
