Box Score 2 KERRVILLE/SEGUIN, TX - The UT Dallas men's soccer team moved into first place in the American Southwest Conference standings over the weekend by narrowly edging Schreiner University, 4-3, in overtime Friday; then shutting out Texas Lutheran 2-0 Saturday.
UTD (9-3-2, 7-0-2), which is now the only team in the league without a conference loss, took over the lead from UT-Tyler (6-1-2), which dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to LeTourneau late Saturday night. The Comets, who have 23 points in the standings, also put some distance between themselves and contenders such as Hardin-Simmons (20 pts), Mississippi College (19 pts) and the University of the Ozarks (17 pts.).
Only the top six teams in the regular-season standings qualify for the post-season ASC Championship Tournament, with the top two earning first-round byes. Of the top six teams, UTD still has games remaining with LeTourneau (5-2-2) this weekend and then UT-Tyler the final weekend of the regular season.
The top team in the regular season standings would host the ASC Championship Tournament.
To get to this point, the Comets had a battle on their hands in both weekend road matches. Schreiner (1-8-2, 1-5-2), which has lost a number of one-goal games this season, gave the Comets all they could handle Friday. UTD needed some last-minute heroics from transfer
Stephen Ambrose to avoid falling for first time this season in a league game.
Neither UTD nor Schreiner could get anything going for the first 60 minutes of the match, but both teams picked up the pace offensively in the final 30 minutes of regulation. UTD's
Jess Mitchell got the team's first goal on an assist from
Kevin White at the 60:43 mark, but SU's Phillip Anderson tied the game up just three minutes later with the first of his three goals in the match.
Ambrose then put the Comets back in front on a Mitchell assist at the 71:04 mark, but the lid came off the net on both ends with less than 10 minutes remaining. Anderson scored two quick goals at 82:34 and 86:59 to put SU in front with less than three minutes left, 3-2. But Ambrose knocked in the tying goal unassisted with just :59 seconds on the clock and the game went to overtime.
In the first extra period, Ambrose again came through with the game winner at 96:53.
UTD goalkeeper
Jake Brandon had to make six saves in the match for the Comets to hold on.
Against TLU, the match was somewhat less dramatic, but not by much.
Miguel Garcia got UTD's first lead with just 4:03 left in the first period when White came through with an assist. Leading 1-0, the Comets had to turn back several TLU advances before White got the insurance goal on a header off an Ambrose corner kick.
