Comets Finish Regular Season On High Note, But Fall From Top of ASC Standings

UTD Third Seed In ASC Tournament After Splitting Final Weekend Road Trip

UTD COACH JACK PEEL IS HOPING HIS TEAM CAN BUILD ON ITS FINAL WIN TO DO WELL AT THE ASC TOURNAMENT.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TYLER, TX - The UT Dallas men's soccer team's dreams of wininng a regular season American Southwest Conference championship and earning the right to host the ASC Championship Tournament were dashed Thursday night when the Comet offense failed to produce for the second straight game, and led to 3-0 loss to UT-Tyler.

Despite a 5-0 road win at Concordia Saturday, the loss to Tyler propelled the Patriots into the ASC regular season lead and dropped UTD into a tie for second place with Hardin-Simmons, which lost its season finale at Texas Lutheran Saturday. Tyler will host the ASC Tournament next weekend, and HSU (which holds a slight tiebreaker edge over the Comets) will earn the No. 2 seed.

That means UTD (11-5-2, 9-2-2), which was leading the ASC outright and did not have a single conference loss just a week ago, will enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed. UTD will play a quarterfinal matchup against Texas Lutheran at 2 pm Friday with the winner advancing to meet No. 2 seed HSU in a semifinal game at 2 pm Saturday (Click here for tournament bracket).

The Comets are looking to regain some of the offensive firepower they had earlier this season, and got off to a good start in their regular season finale at Concordia Saturday. UTD put together a 19-8 shot advantage and got goals from five different players in the win.

Michael Anyirah got his first goal of the season at the 35:39 mark on an assist from Stephen Ambrose. Ambrose then scored unassisted just 1:21 later to make it 2-0 at the half. In the second period, Kevin White scored his 16th goal of the season four minutes in, then Jess Mitchell and Russell Forontanrad (on an assist from Brandon Bridgewater) added goals  for the 5-0 win.

UTD didn't have nearly that kind of output against Tyler on Thursday. Despite a 13-8 shot advantage, the Comets could not solve UTT goalkeeper Mark Oliphant, who made five saves. Tyler managed only five shots on goal, but snuck three of them past the Comets' Jake Brandon for the win.
