Box Score RICHARDSON, TEXAS (10.31.09) – The UT Dallas men's soccer may have missed out on the American Southwest Conference post-season for the first time in eight years, but they ended the season with the sweet taste of victory in their mouths after finishing off their season with a 3-0 win over Concordia University-Texas Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Cory Roth, who was honored before the game with three other senior teammates, scored twice for the Comets; and teammate
Stephen Ambrose, also playing his final game, punched in one as well as the Comets (9-6-3 overall) finished with a winning record for the 12th consecutive year. UTD finished in a tie for 8th place in the conference standings at 6-5-1, five points out of one of the top six spots that qualify for the tournament. The win snapped a three-game losing streak that cost the Comets a chance to return to the post-season.
UTD slowly took over the momentum in the Saturday finale, breaking loose for three second-period goals after playing a fairly even match in the first. Concordia hung close with UTD, down just 11-8 in shots at halftime, but managed just three second-half shots and not forcing a single Comet save after the break.
Roth, who had a game-high eight shots in the match broke the scoreless tie with a breakaway 2:52 into the second half on a feed from
Patrick Hing. Almost six minutes later, Ambrose launched one of his patented long-range missiles that caught Tornado goalkeeper Ubaldo Vazquez off-guard. Roth then added an insurance goal at the 66:34 mark on a feed from
Mazi Rabiee that sealed the deal.
The officials in the game whistled 22 fouls, and Concordia ended up with two yellow cards and a pair of red card ejections, including one of its coaches.
The Comets were able to empty the bench late with the game in hand. In addition to Roth and Ambrose, the Saturday finale was the final game for UTD senior goalkeeper
Jake Brandon and midfielder
Jarod Payne.
