UTD Makes Two Early Goals Stand Up In Win

JUNIOR MAZI RABIEE HAD A GOAL AND ASSIST IN THE FRIDAY WIN.
Box Score ABILENE, TX (09.11.09) – The UT Dallas men's soccer team handed nationally-ranked Southwestern University its first loss of the season Friday, downing the No. 20-ranked Pirates, 3-1, at the annual ASC/SCAC Challenge, played at Hardin-Simmons University.

Junior Mazi Rabiee scored the first goal and assisted on another as UTD took a 2-0 first half lead over Southwestern, which had already defeated American Southwest Conference rivals UT-Tyler and Mary Hardin-Baylor on its way to a 3-0 start to the season.

Rabiee got his first goal 33:41 into the game on an assist from Mizael Najera, then set up Cory Roth to make it 2-0 at the 51:22 mark. Southwestern kicked things up a notch in the second half, forcing UTD goalkeeper Jake Brandon into making seven second-half saves. The Pirates cut the lead to one on a Josh Spencer goal with just 6:30 left in the match.

UTD, however, answered with a goal from Brandon Bridgewater on a Jarrod Payne assist to put the game out of reach with just two minutes left.

UTD outshot Southwestern, 11-5, in building the first-half lead.

The Comets will face another Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe, 25th-ranked Trinity, Saturday afternoon.
