Box Score 2 COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (09.06.09) - Senior
Cory Roth and freshman
Bryan Shiba each scored second-half goals as the UT Dallas men's soccer team knocked off tournament host Colorado College, 2-0, Saturday afternoon for their first win of the season.
On Sunday, the Comets (1-0-2) did everything but win in their tournmaent finale, settling for a 1-1 overtime tie with Fontbonne University.
Roth, who was one of the team's leading scorers as a freshman, but has been injured much of his last two seasons, got the Comets' first goal of the young season at the 69:28 mark on an unassisted play. Shiba, a freshman from Houston's Cy-Fair High School, then picked up his first collegiate goal 11 minutes later to give UTD some insurance.
The Comet defense made the two goals stand up as UTD goalkeeper
Jake Brandon was only put into a save situation three times during the match. UTD put six of its 16 shots on goal in the match. The match was extremely physical, coaches said, as referees issued a combined 27 foul calls and issued four yellow and two red cards.
UTD dominated the Sunday afternoon showdown with Fontbonne, but fell to some bad luck and bizarre circumstances. Senior
Jarrod Payne put the Comets ahead 1-0 midway through the first half on an assist from transfer junior
Anthony Stryk. Despite a 14-5 shot advantage in the second half (including 9 shots on goal), however, the Comets could not get another ball past FU goalkeeper Zach Will, who had to make 13 saves on the afternoon.
Then, with just 8 minutes remaining in regulation, Fontbonne's Mike Utley scored on only the second shot on goal the Griffins had all day. Moments later, the two teams had to clear the field with lightening in the area. When the game resumed 30 minutes later, regulation and two overtime periods had to be played in the rain.
UTD finished the game with a flurry, forcing two saves in the final two minutes of regulation, but could not get the gamewinner. The Comets got off four shots in the first overtime period with one hitting the post and another requiring a save. Still, no scoring.
