Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (10.16.10) – Mired in a four-game winless streak and falling further back into the pack in the American Southwest Conference post-season chase, the UT Dallas men's soccer team desperately needed something to go their way Saturday afternoon in their home finale against LeTourneau.
A bounce. A referee's call. A final score.
Saturday afternoon, they finally got what they needed, taking full advantage of a hand ball foul call in the LETU box with just 2:36 left on the clock to finally put away a 1-0 victory over LeTourneau and stay in the echilon of the ASC standings.
Despite dominating possession throughout and building a 24-9 shot advantage in the contest, the Comets had once again failed to put anything in the net and looked like they might be heading to their fourth overtime game in the last five matches. But on UTD's 14th corner kick of the game, the ball bounced up and hit a YellowJacket defender clearly in the hands and the ensuing penalty allowed Comet senior
Billie Dixon to rocket a low bullet past LETU keeper Kyle Davis for the game winner in the 87th minute.
Earlier in the half, Comet keeper
Bailey Williams had just barely dodged giving up a potential game-winning goal to the YellowJackets, making five fairly dramatic second-half saves to preserve the shutout. He finished the day with nine saves. Until giving up the penalty shot goal, Davis had been equal to the task, stopping nine Comet shots.
The win snapped a mid-season slide for the Comets (now 9-4-2 overall). who had managed just two ties in their last four matches and fallen from the top of the ASC standings to back in a pack of nine teams vying for six post-season spots. The win improved UTD's conference mark to 6-2-2, good enough for third place heading into the last two weeks of the year.
The Comets are still at a disadvantage, however, with just three ASC games remaining and less than a single-point lead on as many as six teams (all of which have four games left) that could catch them. UTD travels to meet Concordia and first-play UT Tyler next weekend before finishing up the season on the road at the University of the Ozarks.
LeTourneau's post-season aspirations took a hit with the loss as the YellowJackets (8-7 overall) fell to 5-4-0.
