Mississippi College Overruns UTD
In ASC Men's Soccer Semifinals

CHOCTAWS DOMINATE ON BOTH SIDES OF FIELD IN 3-0 WIN

UTD'S ERIC PEKKALA BATTLES A MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE PLAYER FOR A BALL DURING SATURDAY'S ASC SEMIFINAL.
Box Score TYLER, TX (11.06.10) -- A talented and physical Mississippi College men's soccer team pushed and shoved its way to a 3-0 victory over UT Dallas in the semifinals of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Saturday afternoon.

The Choctaws (13-4-0) advanced to the tournament title game Sunday at 1 pm against host UT Tyler by controlling the game offensively early, and defensively throughout.

UTD(12-5-2) managed 15 shots, but were able to put only one on goal as the MC defense constantly surrounded the ball every time the Comets had an offensive opportunity. After MC got on the board for the first time in just the game's 7th minute, the Comets were able to create very few opportunities to get back in the game. Two second-half goals put the game out of reach.

MC, which had lost 1-0 to the Comets earlier this season, got the game-winner in its sixth straight win at 7:32 on a Dylan Bodreaux punch-in of a Michael Cooper shot that had originally been stopped by the Comets. Cooper, the Choctaw's leading scorer and pre-season ASC Offensive Player of the Year, drew UTD defensive attention every time he moved toward the net and also contributed to MC's second goal.

In the 63rd minute, the Choctaws' Julio Cesar Espinal broke free on a sprint down the right sideline, but Cooper's presence coming down the left side distracted the defense again and Espinal was left one-on-one against keeper Bailey Williams for MC's second goal.

The Choctaws then put an exclamation mark on the win just 3:30 later when Rafael Guzman punched one in on an Espinal assist to make it 3-0 and end any hopes of a rally for UTD.

The Comets actually picked up the offense in the second half after getting very few opportunities in the first half, launching nine second-period shots and getting three corner kicks. But the freshman-laden squad managed very chances to get back in the game.

UTD defender Jorge Morales & midfielder Eric Pekkala were named to the all-tournament team.
