Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (09.16.10) - The UT Dallas men's soccer team did not have a shot on goal until the 69th minute of the game, but the first one was all the Comets (now 4-2, 1-0 ASC) needed as they edged Mississippi College, 1-0, in the American Southwest Conference opener for both squads. The Choctaws dropped to 2-2 overall (0-1 ASC).
The win also snapped a two-game losing streak for the Comets, who are perfect at home this season.
Ryan Courson, a junior from Midlothian, accepted a lob pass from
Anthony Stryk, a senior from Rowlett, and took an extreme angle from the left side of the field to tally his second goal of the season and lift the Comets to the victory. Courson's tight shot bounced off the right post and past MC goalkeeper Andrew Dailey. It was Stryk's team-leading second assist of the season.
UTD goalkeeper
Bailey Williams, a senior from Allen, took care of the rest of the game as he and his defense recorded the Comets second shutout of the young season. The Choctaws took 14 shots in the losing effort as Williams collected four saves on the night. MC's Michael Cooper, the ASC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, accounted for seven shots for the Choctaws, four of which were on goal.
The Comets would only manage two more shots on goal the rest of the game, both coming on the same offensive possession. With less than one minute remaining,
Eric Pekkala, a sophomore from Austin, and
Benjamin Tijerina, sophomore from Helotes, took back-to-back shots that were blocked by Dailey. UTD ended the night with eight total shots.
UTD returns to action Saturday afternoon when the Comets host Louisiana College. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at the UTD Soccer Field.
