Box Score ABILENE, TX (09.25.10) – The UT Dallas men's soccer team, which missed the post-season playoffs for the first time in its history last season, is now at the front of the American Southwest Conference pack after posting a 4-0 shutout of McMurry Saturday afternoon.
The Comets (7-2 overall) are now the only team in the conference regular season race with a perfect 4-0 record.
To maintain this edge in the standings, the Comets had to bounce back less than 24 hours after winning an emotional 4-3 battle with former co-leader Hardin-Simmons on Friday to hand the winless McMurry team its ninth straight loss of the season.
UTD overcame a wet and sloppy field for the second day in a row and put up the game-winner just 7:15 into the match. Senior
Billie Dixon scored his first goal of the season, controlling a cross from
Brian Bienhoff and beating McMurry keeper Matt Mouer to the lower left part of the net to put the Comets ahead to stay.
The match, however, was anything but decided until 21 minutes into the second period. Bienhoff did the honors this time, taking a
Jorge Morales feed and beating the keeper to the lower right this time in the 66th minute.
Ryan Courson then took a Dixon cross and made it 3-0 just seven minutes later and
Anthony Stryk finished off the scoring in the 81st minute by stealing the ball and converting with a high shot from far outside.
The Comets held a 19-8 shot advantage for the game and were whistled for five offsides penalties during the afternoon. Keeper
Bailey Williams had to make just three saves before giving way to
Colin Curtis late in the game.
UTD returns home next weekend to host Howard Payne and Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday and Saturday.
