Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (09.04.10) – Playing their third game in the last four days, the UTD men's soccer team overcame fatigue, a late regulation letdown and an intense, physical game Saturday night to win their third straight - a 3-2 overtime victory over Austin College.
A trio of newcomers scored for the Comets, capped off by freshman
Julian Torres' game-winning goal off a header 4:46 into overtime.
To grab the extra period win, the Comets (3-0) had to shake off the disappointment and shock of giving up a pair of late goals to the Kangaroos (1-1), who erased a 2-0 UTD lead in the final 13:25 of regulation.
The third straight win to open the season was UTD's best start since 2001, when the Comets won eight straight and finished the season at 15-2-2.
Saturday's physical game featured a combined 28 foul calls and a pair of yellow cards. UTD outshot AC, 18-12, but was only able to put seven on goal. AC started and finished regulation strong to put 7-of-12 shots on goal, forcing five saves by keeper
Bailey Williams.
After 68:39 of regulation, the Comets finally broke the 0-0 stalemate with their first goal on a bizarre play. After a foul just outside the box, newcomer
Mark Brooks lined up to serve a ball into a rush of teammates, but no one on either team got a foot on the ball and AC keeper Grant Gosselin couldn't track it down in the crowd as it slipped into the net to give UTD a 1-0 lead.
Just eight minutes later, the Comets made it a seemingly comfortable 2-0 advantage when transfer
Ryan Courson redirected a
Mazi Rabiee serve across the front of the net.
The lead, however, was anything but comfortable. Just :33 seconds later, AC again made it a one-goal game on a 20-yard shot by Chris Stein from straight out front. Then, with just 2:07 left in the game, the 'Roos tied the score on a redirected header right in front of the net.
Fortunately for UTD, the break between regulation and the first overtime period gave the team time to shake off the shock of seeing their lead evaporate. The team regrouped, worked the ball down field and
Justin Bailey lofted a perfect soft serve across the front of the AC net that Torres was able to redirect from the right side into the net.
The victory ended UTD's string of three straight home games to start the season. The Comets travel to Southwestern University in Georgetown next weekend for their annual showdown with Southern Collegiate Athletic Association powers Southwestern and nationally-ranked Trinity University. UTD returns home on Sept. 16 to open American Southwest Conference play against Mississippi College.
