Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (10.20.11) - The UT Dallas men's soccer team has a chance of playing for first place in the American Southwest Conference standings after posting a convincing 2-0 win over Concordia University Thursday night.
The Comets (11-1-2, 9-1-1 ASC) still trail the University of Texas at Tyler by percentage points after the Thursday win, but host the conference-leading Patriots Saturday night. The winner of that match would take over the ASC lead with a week left in the regular season. The regular season champion will host the ASC Championship Tournament the weekend of November 4-5-6, something the Comets have not done since 2004.
To get to that point, however, the Comets needed a solid effort Thursday night to get past a pesky CTX squad (5-7-1, 5-5-1). The two teams were scoreless at halftime, but UTD finally got the game-winner on the board just 2:55 into the second half and added an insurance goal with less than three minutes remaining.
After the two teams battled to a first-half draw, junior transfer
Robert Lopez gave the Comets the only score they would need just 2:55 into the second half, firing in a loose ball after a cross to make it 1-0. UTD, which outshot the Tornados 13-7, then put the game out of reach when
Benjamin Tijerina punched in a cross from Zach Hansen with just 2:40 left in the game.
The Comet defense was sterling all night long, never giving up a single shot on goal and continuously battling for possession every time CTX got on the attack.
UTD hosts UT-Tyler Saturday night at 7 pm with the ASC lead on the line.
