SHREVEPORT, LA (09.23.11) -- Making their first road trip ever to the campus of Centenary College, the UT Dallas volleyball team took a close 3-1 win over the American Southwest Conference's newest members Friday night. UTD topped the Ladies of Centenary, 21-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-23.
The Comets withstood the 28-kill effort of freshman Brooke Bahlinger and senior Shelby Singleton, one of Centenary's holdover athletes from their days as an NCAA Division I institution. Centenary, which had seven upperclassmen on its roster, is in its first season of competing as a non-scholarship Division III school, but still must honor the scholarships of its existing student-athletes.
After falling in a close 25-21 first set, UTD took control on its way to a 25-19 win in the second set despite connecting on just 9-of-39 attacks. UTD improved its offense in the final two sets, combining for 31 kills in a pair of 25-23 wins.
All four sets were close with the score tied late. UTD got within 22-21 in the first set before letting it get away. In the second set, the score was tied 19-19 before the Comets reeled off six straight points to win it. In both the final two sets, Centenary rallied to tie the score at 22-22, but UTD responded by scoring three of the final four points in each set.
Junior
Dana Hilzendager topped the Comets with 13 kills, but teammates
Hillary Baugh and
Tabitha Terrell were also in double figures with 21 combined kills.
Halea Williams and
Taylour Toso contributed seven each. Hilzendager also paced the Comet defense with 23 digs. Terrell was credited with 5 block assists as UTD totalled 8.0 blocks.
UTD has little time to rest as they travel to Clinton, Mississippi overnight to face Mississippi College Saturday afternoon.
