Lopez Gets Another OT Winner For UTD, Comets Top CTX, 3-2

VICTORY KEEPS COMETS ON PACE FOR END-OF-YEAR SHOWDOWN FOR TOP SPOT IN ASC

ROBERT LOPEZ HELPED THE COMETS ESCAPE AN UPSET LOSS WITH AN OVERTIME GOAL.
Box Score AUSTIN, TX (10.13.12) - For the second time in a week, senior Robert Lopez came up with the game-winning shot for the UTD men's soccer team in overtime, scoring the game-winner for the Comets in a 3-2 American Southwest Conference win over Concordia.

Lopez, a senior from Fullerton, Calif., also played the hero for the Comets last Sunday, scoring a "golden goal" for UTD in a double overtime win over UT Tyler.

The Comets, who were still licking their wounds after suffering their first conference loss on Saturday (3-4 at Mary Hardin-Baylor), took a half before getting their offensive game in gear. The underdog Tornados scored twice in the first half - including a penalty kick goal - to go up 2-0 at intermission.

Brian Shiba had a chance to get the Comets on the board early in the second half with his own PK, but missed the chance. Freshman Jordan Rubel from McKinney did the honors instead, though, scoring off a corner kick to cut the lead in half at 2-1. Michael Darrow then tied the game up with about 15 minutes remaining in regulation with a hard low shot past the CTX keeper.

In overtime, Lopez finished the Comets' comeback, taking a long pass in behind the defense and beating the keeper for the game-winner.

Lopez' goal helped the Comets (9-4, 8-1 ASC) keep pace in the ASC regular season title race, and avoid an upset at the hands of the Tornados (3-9-1, 2-5), who had won just two conference games. UTD and Mississippi College (8-0 ASC) are neck-and-neck with eight wins each, though the Choctaws have one more conference game to play than the Comets the rest of the way. The two teams meet in the regular season finale Oct. 27 on the UTD Soccer Field with the ASC regular season title potentially still on the line.
