UTD Edges Past LeTourneau 1-0 To Stay Atop ASC Chase

FIRST-HALF GOAL STANDS UP IN DEFENSIVE STRUGGLE WITH YELLOWJACKETS

BRIAN SHIBA GOT UTD'S ONLY GOAL ON A 25-YARD SCORE OFF A CORNER KICK REBOUND.
Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (10.04.12) - The UT Dallas men's soccer team stayed perfect in American Southwest Conference play Thursday night, but it took a long rebound shot off a corner kick to end a frustrating night with  a 1-0 victory past the defense-minded LeTourneau YellowJackets.

Brian Bienhoff Action
Senior Bryan Shiba ended a scramble after an Eric Pekkala corner kick when Robert Lopez found him alone just outside the box. Shiba gunned a 25-yarder that snuck through the LETU defensive wall and found the net to give the Comets the only goal of the game at the 29:26 mark. With the YellowJackets (2-8, 1-4) content to pack things back on defense all night long, it was the only goal UTD (7-3, 6-0) would need. The goal was Shiba's fourth of the season.

The Comets dominated possession all night long, building a 19-3 shot advantage, but found it difficult to get anything organized offensively against a YellowJacket defense that often included 8-9 players back deep. UTD's leading scorer, junior Michael Darrow, was shut out for the first time since Sept. 7.

LETU, on the other hand, never really gave itself a chance to score with this alignment, continually losing the ball in the midfield to the Comet defense.

The YellowJackets did not put a shot on goal all night long and barely had possession on the Comets' side of the field. But LETU had a good chance to get the equalizer late in the game on a long pass to Mario Lopez, who broke free up the middle. UTD goalkeeper Steven Nicknish, however, beat Lopez to the ball and the YellowJackets never got to take advantage of their best opportunity for a goal.

The Comets did have a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks, but failed to convert.

UTD is back home Sunday afternoon to take on UT-Tyler, which is 4-1 in ASC play. That game is schedule for 5 pm.
