Comet Men Return Home From Colorado After Splitting Pair Of Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (09.02.12) - Junior forward Michael Darrow scored three goals as the UT Dallas men's soccer team kicked off the 2012 season witth a split at a classic hosted by Colorado College.

The Comets (now 1-1) opened the season Friday with a 3-2 overtime loss to host Colorado College before downing Nebraska Wesleyan, 2-1, Sunday afternoon.

Darrow scored a pair of first-half goals in just over a span of three minutes, but it wasn't enough as the Comets fell at Colorado College, 3-2, Friday afternoon in overtime.

Darrow tallied the opening goal of the game in the 24th minute as he collected a rebound off a shot by teammate Antonio Rodriguez and drilled it past CC goalkeeper Forrest Marowitz. He added second goal of the game in the 27th minute after a pass from Robert Lopez.

The Comets managed just five shots in the opening 45 minutes, three of which coming from Darrow. The UTD defense did shutout the host Tigers as junior goalkeeper Steven Nicknish collected three first-half saves. CC nearly doubled the Comets' shot total in the half, with nine shots before the break.

CC cut the Comet lead in half in the 54th minute on a header by Matt Fechter after a cross from teammate Sean Parham. Parham then tallied the equalizer in the 69th minute on a header after a pass from Fecther. The Tigers scored the game-winner in the 7th minute of the first overtime period when Parham found Daniel Wright in front of the net and Wright scooted the ball to the left side of Nicknish.

Darrow ended the game with just the three shots he took in the first half while Rodriguez also tallied three shots, none of which were on goal. Nicknish finished with eight saves.

After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Comets scored a pair of second-half goals to come from behind and even their record with a 2-1 win over Nebraska Wesleyan.

The Prairie Wolves got on the board in the 28th minute when Colby Twist beat the UTD defense and placed a shot out of reach of Nicknish.

In the 70th minute, the Comets finally knotted the game when freshman Luke Cotter took a cross from Darrow and tallied on NWU keeper Zach Mergens. Darrow then added his third goal of the weekend as he headed in the game-winner after a corner crossing pass from teammate Robert McGinnis.

Nicknish faced just nine shots on the day, four of which were on goal. Darrow was busy on the afternoon with six shots, four on goal, while Omar Jaroun took a game-high seven shots, also four on goal.

The Comets return to action next weekend with a pair of non-conference games in San Antonio. UTD will face Trinity Saturday at 7:30 p.m. before meeting Southwestern on neutral ground Sunday at 5 p.m.
