RICHARDSON, TX (09.22.12) - The UT Dallas men's soccer team collected its fourth straight shutout to open American Southwest Conference play as the Comets blanked Texas Lutheran, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at the UTD Soccer Field.
Junior forward
Michael Darrow netted two more goals, giving him 10 on the season, while
Eric Pekkala added his first goal of the season as the Comets have now outscored their four ASC opponents by a combined score of 12-0.
Darrow tallied his first goal of the game in the 25th minute as he dribbled across the top of the box, turn and drilled a shot past TLU goalkeeper Jonathan Michael to give the Comets an early 1-0 cushion. Darrow added his second score in the 57th minute after taking a pass from teammate
Will Collins and ran past the Bulldog defense up the middle of the box. Pekkala's tally came in the 70th minute as he beat Michael 1-one-1 after a crossing pass from
Omar Jaroun.
The Comets (now 5-3, 4-0 ASC) finished the game with 21 shots, compared to just seven shots by TLU. UTD took 10 shots in the opening half and added 11 shots in the final 45 minutes as the Comets outplayed TLU in both periods. UTD had seven shots on goal, the Bulldogs finished with three.
Darrow had a game-high five shots, two on goal, while
Michael Matthews finished with three shots. UTD keeper
Steven Nicknish posted another shout between the pipes, making three saves.
UTD returns to action next Saturday as the Comets travel to East Texas Baptist. Game time is 7 p.m. in Marshall.
