Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (10.19.13) - The nationally-ranked UT Dallas men's soccer team continued their march through the American Southwest Conference Saturday afternoon, shutting down Concordia Texas, 3-0.
The Comets, who lead the conference with a 5-0-2 record in ASC games, ran their record-setting undefeated streak to 14 games and are now 11-0-3 on the season. Concordia fell to 1-8-2 overall, 1-4-1 in the ASC.
UTD is ranked No. 7 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national Division III poll.
The Comets again waited until the second half to break the game open. After nursing a tenuous 1-0 lead at intermission, UTD put together back-to-back goals in just :18 midway through the second half, and that was enough to insure the victory as Concordia was held to just one shot after intermission.
UTD got the game winner just 16:49 into the match when junior midfielder
Omar Jaroun took a long entry pass from freshman
Sam Konstanty on the left side and gunned a shot past the CTX defense and goalkeeper Nick Martin.
With the score still 1-0 in the 73rd minute, sophomore
Lukas Teese came off the bench and got the Comets' second scoring chance on a one-timer in front of the net on a feed from
Antonio Rodriguez. Then, just as the ball was put back in play, the Comets intercepted the ball at midfield and Jaroun found
Michael Darrow up the middle. Darrow took the ball between a pair of defenders and fired a shot that beat Martin for the third time. Only :18 had elapsed off the game clock between goals.
UTD dominated Concordia on corner kicks, posting a 13-1 advantage, but failed to convert on any of them. UTD built a 21-4 shot advantage, including allowing just one shot from the Tornados after halftime. The UTD defensive line kept UTD goalkeeper
Steven Nicknish from having to be too involved. Nicknish, who picked up his record 19th career shutout in the win, had to make just one save all afternoon.
The win put UTD all alone atop the ASC standings, a half game ahead of Mississippi College (4-0-2 after having a game rained-out earlier this year). UTD travels to meet third-place Louisiana College and Mississippi College next weekend. Games against MC do count in the standings, but the Choctaws are not eligible to advance to the post-season because they are in transition to NCAA Division II this year.
