Comets Open Series At Louisiana College With Friday Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PINEVILLE, LA (04.19.13) - The UT Dallas softball team held on to third place in the American Southwest Conference East Division Friday evening with a split at Louisiana College to open a four-game weekend series. UTD fell short of a come-from-behind win in the opener, falling 6-5, before taking the night cap, 8-4.

The Comets (now 24-13-1, 12-10 ASC East) wrap up the regular season Saturday with 12 p.m. doubleheader with the Lady Cats. UTD has a one-game over Louisiana College (22-13, 11-11 ASC East) for third place in the division.

GAME 1 - LC 6, UTD 5
The Comets scored two run in the top of the 7th but left the game-tying run on second base in a 6-5 loss to Louisiana College to open the four-game weekend series.

UTD grabbed an early lead with an unearned run in the top of the 1st when Jordan Bratcher scored when Avery McHugh reached on a two-out error by the Lady Cats. However, LC responded with four runs in the bottom of the 2nd to take control of the game, 4-1.

The Comets rallied in the 3rd with RBI singles by McHugh and Hannah Creech to draw within a run, 4-3, but the Lady Cats plated two runs in the 5th on a double by Stephanie Jaeger. In the 7th, Megan Aragones used a two-out double to left to score McHugh and Riley, but was stranded on second to end the game.

Jeni Olbeter (11-8) was handed the loss, giving up five earned runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings of work. She struck out one and walked three. Micah Starkey tossed the final 1.1 innings, holding the Lady Cats scoreless with two hits. McHugh, Creech, Aragones and Feikis each went 2-fof-4.

GAME 2 - UTD 8, LC 4
After giving up an early lead, the Comets used a four-run 5th to rally for an 8-4 win over Louisiana College to wrap up Friday's doubleheader.

UTD opened the scoring in the 1st with an RBI double by Brittanie Knowles followed by a run-scoring single by Rachel Riley, giving the Comets a 2-0 lead. Leading 2-1 in the 3rd, the Comets regained a two-run lead on a sacrifice fly by Knowles, scoring Bratcher.

The Lady Cats scored a run in the bottom of the 3rd and took 4-3 lead with two runs in the 4th, setting up UTD's comeback. The Comets knotted the game, 4-4, when Morgan Anderson scored from second base on an LC error on a Knowles ground ball. After a pitching change, McHugh plated Stephanie Harris with a single. UTD added a run on a sacrifice fly by Riley and an RBI single by Taylor Ervin. The Comets tacked on a final run in the 6th when Aragones lead off the frame with her second home run of the season.

Aragones (7-5) tossed a complete game, giving three earned runs on seven hits. She fanned seven Lady Cats and issued one walk. Knowles was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI while McHugh was 2-for-4.
