Box Score 2 RICHARDSON, TX (04.05.13) - The UT Dallas softball team was issued its first two home losses of the season Friday, dropping both ends of an American Southwest Conference East Division doubleheader to No. 4-ranked Texas-Tyler. The Comets fell in the opener, 6-1, before UT-Tyler finished the sweep with a 5-1 win in the night cap.
The Comets (now 15-10-1, 6-6 ASC East) will continue their tough stretch Tuesday when they host No. 13-ranked East Texas Baptist. First pitch for the twin bill is set for 5 p.m. at the UTD Softball Field.
UT-Tyler improved to 26-2 overall and 11-1 in ASC East play.
GAME 1 - UTT 6, UTD 1
The Comets managed just two hits as they opened the doubleheader with a 6-1 loss to the nationally ranked Patriots.
After giving up a two-run homer to UTT's Rachel Howell in the top of the 2nd, the Comets answered in the bottom half of the frame with their only run of the game.
Avery McHugh opened UTD's at bat with a single to centerfield, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Brittanie Knowles and then scored on the Patriots' only error of the doubleheader.
Robin Thomas' ground ball to the left side of the infield was scooped up cleanly by UTT third baseman Ashley Endsley, but an errant throw allowed McHugh to score from second base.
The visiting Patriots then added three runs on four hits in the 5th and tacked on a two-out bases-loaded walk in the top of the 7th. UTT finished the game with nine hits and left nine runners on base, thanks to five walks.
Jeni Olbeter (8-6) earned the loss, giving up five earned runs on nine hits in a complete-game outing. She struck out three Patriots. McHugh was 1-for-3 while
Megan Aragones was 1-for-2.
GAME 2 - UTT 5, UTD 1
The Comets recorded double plays in each of the first two innings, but a four-run 4th by the Patriots was too much to overcome as UTD dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 5-1.
The Patriots opened the game with a single by Joey Cronin, but unassisted double play by
Jonelle Feikis on a Raven Rodriguez liner kept UTT at bay in the 1st. The Patriots then loaded the bases in the 2nd with no outs before UTT's Lauren Robenalt popped up to shallow centerfield, allowing
Hannah Creech to start a twin-killing, getting the second out at second base. It marked just the 10th time in program history that the Comets had turned two double plays in the same game.
But, UT-Tyler took advantage of its base runners in the top of the 4th with back-to-back two-run hits by Rodriguez and Heather Abshire to grab a 4-0 lead. The Comets got a run back in the 5th when Knowles led off the frame with a double, moved to third on a bunt single by Creech and scored on a Feikis groundout. The Patriots regained a four-run lead in the top of the 6th, however, with a lead-of homer by Cronin.
Aragones (3-3) was handed the loss, giving up five earned runs on eight hits in 7.0 innings of work. Aragones struck out one and issued five walks. Creech was 2-for-3 as the Comets had just four hits in the night cap.
