Michael Matthews scored two goals in the final 13 minutes as the UT Dallas men's soccer team earned a 4-2 win over LeTourneau Thursday night in the American Southwest Conference opener for both teams.
The Comets (now 6-2-2, 1-0 ASC) grabbed a 2-1 lead in the first half, but gave up the equalizer the LETU in the 65th minute to set up Matthews' eventual game-winner and insurance goal. UTD finished the match with a 33-12 shot advantage over the YellowJackets and finished with 16 shots on goal, but needed the two late goals to secure the victory.
UTD opened the scoring in the 13th minute on an unassisted goal by
Travis White, his second of the season, as the senior scored on a free kick from about 25 yards out. The YellowJackets knotted the game, 1-1, on an unassisted goal by Alan Flores less than three minutes later. The Comets regained the lead, 2-1, in the 18th minute when
Danny Meyer took a pass from White and scooted the ball past a diving LETU keeper for the freshman's second tally of the year. The scored remained 2-1 for the remainder of the second half after three early goals.
The YellowJackets pushed in the equalizer in the 65th minute on a tally by Adam Schultz, thanks to an entry pass from teammate Hunter Swift. With just under 13 minutes left to play, Matthews score his first goal of the season, unassisted from about six yards out after taking the ball into the box himself. Matthews second goal of the game came in the 85th minute on a deep cross from
Omar Jaroun.
Meyers finished with a game-high nine shots, six of which were on goal, while White, Matthews and Jaroun each added four shots. UTD goalkeeper
Joseph Weber made four saves, playing the full 90 minutes.
The Comets return to action Saturday night as they host rival Texas-Tyler. Game time is 7 p.m. at the UTD Soccer Field.
