Comet Men Grab Share Of ASC Lead With 3-0 Win Over HPU

RICHARDSON, TX (10.23.14) - The UT Dallas men's soccer team recorded its third straight shutout and snagged a share of first place in the American Southwest Conference after a 3-0 blanking of Howard Payne Thursday night.

The Comets (now 10-3-2, 5-1 ASC) now lead the ASC with 15 points, along with Hardin-Simmons, with three games left on the conference slate. UTD plays Hardin-Simmons, which was handed its first ASC loss of season Thursday, 2-1, at Ozarks, Saturday at 4 p.m. for Senior Day.

After a scoreless first half, UTD got three goals from three different players as the Comets took advantage of a 31-4 shot advantage against the Yellow Jackets. Omar Jaroun opened the scoring just 25 seconds into the second half as she drilled a ball past a diving HPU keeper after a long pass from teammate Michael Matthews. The goal was Jaroun's fourth of the season and second game-winner.

UTD added a second goal in the 65th minute as senior Brian Childs tallied his first career score off a corner kick by Danny Meyer. Chase Withrow capped the scoring with a laser in the 77th after a long pass from Jaroun. It was Withrow's first goal of the season.

Jaroun finished with a school-record 12 shots, only one of which was on goal. Jaroun's 12 shots broke the previous mark of 11 shots, set by Kevin White in 2008 and matched by Michael Darrow last season, also against Howard Payne. Matthews finished with seven shots while Meyer had four shots and Withrow had three shots. UTD goalkeeper Joseph Weber recorded one save in just over 76 minutes in goal while Tyler Cotter played the final 13:47 without facing a Yellow Jacket shot.
