Comets Take Over ASC Lead After Stopping HSU With OT Penalty Kick

RICHARDSON, TX (10.25.14) - On a day when the UT Dallas men's soccer team honored seven seniors playing their last regular season home game, the Comets moved into position to play at home again by taking over the American Southwest Conference lead with a 1-0 overtime win.

The Comets (11-3-2 overall) moved into first place in the ASC chase after one of those seniors, fifth-year midfielder Julian Torres, fired a penalty kick into the net past diving HSU goalkeeper Michael Vargas for the win. The Comets got the penalty kick opportunity 6:49 into overtime when a foul was whistled against HSU in the box on a charge to the goal by UTD's Chase Withrow.

The win put the Comets first in line to host the ASC Championship Tournament with two regular season games left (next weekend at Concordia and Mary Hardin-Baylor). HSU (6-3-2, 5-2 ASC) dropped into second place in the race.

The two longtime rivals looked to be heading toward their second overtime tie this season after 90 minutes of scoreless regulation. But UTD came out grabbing possession in the overtime period and got a breakaway toward the goal by Withrow that ended in the deciding foul call. HSU was whistled for 13 infractions (compared to 10 by UTD) in the contest, and was tagged with three yellow cards.

In regulation, UTD outshot the Cowboys, 15-12, putting eight on goal in regulation. HSU had its chances, but only forced Comet keeper Joseph Weber into a save opportunity twice. HSU had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks, but the Comet defense was able to clear the ball each time.

Omar Jaroun paced the Comets with four shots, three on goal. Withrow, Jason Horvath, Will Collins and Torres had two shots apiece.
