RICHARDSON, TX (10.24.14) - On a night when senior
Taylour Toso became the program's all-time kills leader, the UT Dallas volleyball team supported her with the biggest win of the season as the Comets swept No. 24-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor Friday night in American Southwest Conference play. The Comets routed UMHB, 25-16, 25-14, 25-23.
Toso's record-breaking put-away came on the deciding point of set two as her seventh kill of the evening lifted the Comets to a 2-0 advantage over UMHB. Toso finished the night with a match-high 12 kills, hitting an impressive .522, and now has 1,270 kills in her superb Comet career. Toso break the previous mark of 1,264 kills, set by fellow All-American and former teammate Dana Hilzendager (2009-12).
The Comets improved to 16-8 overall (10-4 in ASC) with their fifth straight conference sweep since suffering a season-high four-match losing streak. UTD will look to wrap up the home portion of the regular season with a 11-1 record Saturday morning against Concordia Texas. Game time is 11 a.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
UTD grabbed a quick 1-0 lead over the Cru after a 25-16 win in the opening set, thanks to five service aces by
Samantha Schwenke during an 8-0 run early in the set. Schwenke's fifth and final ace of the set lifted UTD to a 10-1 lead on the Cru and the Comets never looked back. UTD hit just .200 as a team in the set, getting three kills from
Holyn Handley and two kills each from Toso,
Meredith Crawford and
Michelle Toro in a balanced attack.
The Comets then turned things up a notch in the second set, hitting .417 as a team en route to a 25-14 drubbing of UMHB. UTD had 15 kills in the set with no errors and added three more aces as the Comets cruise to the 2-0 lead. Toso had five kills in the set, capped by her record-breaking point.
The Cru (now 19-5, 11-2 ASC) battled back in the third set, taking three one-point leads before UTD took the lead for good at 14-13 on a UMHB error. The Comets extended their lead to five points, 20-15, on a Toso ace and ended the match on a Handley kill after the Cru drew back within a point.
Toso was the only Comet to reach double-figure kills in the match while Handley had nine kills and Toro finished with six kills. Setter
Kayla Jordan ended with 31 assists, just over 10 per set, while libero
Bethany Werner had a match-high 25 digs.
