Men's Soccer Earns 1st-Ever NCAA Tourney Win, Downs Sagehens, 2-0

RICHARDSON, TX (11.15.14) - The UT Dallas men's soccer team made history Saturday night as the Comets picked up their first-ever NCAA Division III National Tournament victory in a 2-0 win over No. 24-ranked Pomona-Pitzer in an opening round game.

In a match played in near freezing temperatures and continuous light drizzle, the Comets (now 14-4-3) got a pair of second-half goals to notch their first NCAA win in their third trip to the national tournament. UTD will next face Trinity University, the team that has knocked them out of their previous two tournament appearances, in a second-round game at 5 pm Sunday at the UTD Soccer Complex. The winner will advance to the NCAA D-III "Sweet 16" next weekend,

Earlier during the regular season, UTD claimed its first victory over Trinity in program history.

After a scoreless first half Saturday, the Comets got on the scoreboard in the 64th minute when a Danny Meyer corner kick got a fortunate bounce in front of the P-P net and ricocheted off the post into the net without any player touching the ball. The goal was Meyer's fourth of the season and first game-winner. UTD added an insurance goal with just 24 seconds left on the clock when Julian Torres took a Meyer pass at the edge of the box and drilled it past Sagehen keeper Nigel Brady. The tally was Torres' second of the year.

UTD keeper Joseph Weber needed just four saves to collect his fifth shutout of the year as UTD's defense kept the Pomona-Pitzer at bay much of the night. The Comets finished the match with 17 shots, just five on goal, with Meyer leading the charge with three shots.

Trinity advanced to Sunday's meeting with the Comets with a 2-1 win over Hardin-Simmons, getting a goal in the final minute of regulation to earn the victory.
