GEORGETOWN, TX (11.18.14) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team rolled to its second straight win to open the season Tuesday night as the Comets downed Southwestern, 66-44, in non-conference play.
Christina Brosnahan scored a game-high 18 points while
Ashley Shaw pitched in 12 points as extended a nine-point halftime lead to a 22-point victory in the Comets first road game of the season. UTD shot 39.7 percent from the field and made just seven trips to the free throw line.
The Comets (now 2-0) gave up the opening field goal of the game, but answered quickly and never trailed again. Brosnahan finished the opening half with 13 points as UTD secured a 32-23 lead at the break despite Southwestern scoring the final three points of the period. The Comets then shot 41.2 percent (14-of-34) in the second half, hitting four three-pointers to slowly extend their lead. Shaw scored eight of her 12 points and added five rebounds over the final 20 minutes.
Madi Hess and
Iemah Wallace-Perry each added eight points in the win while again Hess led the Comets in rebounding, finishing with 10 boards. Hess also had seven assists and three steals, both team highs. UTD was 27-of-68 from the field, hitting 6-of-18 three-pointers (33.3%), while connecting on 6-of-7 free throws (85.7%). The Comets out-rebounded Southwestern, 46-42.
For the host Pirates (0-1), Jordan Owens had a team-high 14 points while teammate Annie Bourne grabbed a game-best 20 rebounds. Southwestern shot just 29.1 percent (16-of-55) from the floor, hitting just 3-of-16 three-pointers (18.8%), and shot 45 percent (9-of-20) from the free-throw line.
