RICHARDSON, TX (11.09.14) - The UT Dallas men's soccer team out-shot Hardin-Simmons, 21-8, but couldn't find the back of the net in a 2-0 loss to the Cowboys in the American Southwest Conference championship game Sunday afternoon.
The top-seeded Comets (now 13-4-3) had a chance to win the ASC title on its home field for just the second time after a 1-0 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor in Saturday's semifinal, but struggled all afternoon putting any shots on frame. UTD managed just four shots on goal in the 90 minutes, all coming in the second half.
HSU (now 9-4-2) opened the scoring in the 17th minute as Tournament MVP Matt Pitcock tallied for the fourth time in the event, scoring on a loose ball in the six-yard box after a throw-in by teammate Tanner Coffin and a header flick by Dustin Beal. The second-seeded Cowboys then added an insurance goal just 1:12 into the second half when Ewa Coleman scored an unassisted tally from 10 yards out after a scramble in front of the Comet net.
Chase Withrow finished the afternoon with eight shots, however managed just one shot on goal in the match.
Omar Jaroun had four shots while
Connor Crabtree, UTD's goal-scorer in its semifinal win,
Travis White and Michael Matthew each had two shots. Comet keeper
Joseph Weber finished with just one save as HSU managed just three shots on goal for the match.
Jaroun, Crabtree and
Dalton McFarling were all named to the All-Tournament Team for the Comets while Coleman, John Paul Lowenthal and Taylor Jackson joined Pitcock from the Cowboys on the All-Tournament Team. Other honorees on the squad were UMHB's Blake Lander and McKenna Cook and Ozarks' Travis Leach and Shaun Kean.
The Comets will learn their fate for the NCAA Division III National Tournament at 1:30 p.m. Monday when the field is announced.
