ALPINE, TX (12.20.14) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team outscored Sul Ross State by 33 points in the first half en route to a 70-41 road win over the Lobos in American Southwest Conference play.
The Comets (now 7-1, 4-1 ASC) held SRSU to just 12.9 percent (4-of-31) from the field in the opening half as they grabbed a 44-11 lead at the break to secure a fourth consecutive victory. All 17 players on the UTD roster earned floor time while 12 different players scored in the last contest in a three-game road trip. The Comets return home Monday at 3 p.m. to host Howard Payne to open a stretch of three straight home games.
Christina Brosnahan and
Micaela Gonzalez each led the Comets with 10 points as the only UTD players in double figures.
Ashley Shaw and
Madison Steele each collected a team-best six rebounds while
Madi Hess dished out five assists. The Comets shot 46 percent (17-of-37) in the first half before cooling off in the second half, hitting just 7-of-27 shots (29.2 percent) over the final 20 minutes. For the game, UTD shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the floor, hitting 6-of-13 three-pointers (46.2%), and shot 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the free-throw line. The Comets out-rebounded SRSU, 46-40.
The Comets scored the first 14 points of the game as they dominated the opening 20 minutes. UTD secured its first 20-point lead of the afternoon with 10:16 left in the half as Brosnahan's layup lifted the Comets to a 24-4 advantage. Brosnahan's bucket was part of another big run by the Comets in the half as UTD scored 15 straight points en route to a 35-4 lead just under four minutes left before half after a Brown jumper. The Comets widened their margin to as many as 37 points, 43-6, before taking a 33-point lead into the locker room.
Amber Brown led UTD with nine points in the opening half as 11 different players scored before halftime. The Comets forced 11 SRSU turnovers and dominated the boards, 30-18.
UTD cooled off considerably in the second half as Brown was the only Comet starter who played more than eight minutes after the break.
