Comets Get Defensive In 61-38 Road Win Over Ozarks

CLARKSVILLE, AR (12.4.14) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team picked up its second straight win Thursday night with a 61-38 road win over Ozarks in American Southwest Conference play.

The Comets (now 4-1, 2-1 ASC) held Ozarks to just 29 percent from the field for the game as UTD forced 23 Eagle turnovers in the victory. Amber Brown led the Comet offense with 15 points while Nicolette Erkman was the only other UTD player in double figures with 12 points.

Thankfully for the Comets that they held an opponent to a season-low shooting percentage as UTD shot just 33.3 percent (25-of-75) on the night, hitting just 3-of-12 three-pointers (25%) against the Eagles.

UTD jumped to a quick 4-0 lead with a pair of free throws by Madi Hess followed by a jumper by Erkman in what would be a slow start for both teams. The host Eagles traded leads with the Comets after a 6-0 run before UTD took the lead for good, 11-8, on a Brown three-pointer, with 13:53 left before the break. The Comets grabbed their first double-digit lead with 2:03 left in the half on an Emily Price three-pointer, lifting UTD to a 25-15 advantage. The Comets added a Hess three-pointer before Ozarks hit a free throw to cut the UTD lead to 12 points, 28-16, at halftime.

The Comets slowly added to their lead in the second half, grabbing a 41-20 advantage over Ozarks with 12:34 remaining, thanks to a 13-4 run to open the period. After a short surge by the Eagles, UTD regained a 20-point lead in the final four minutes, extending the cushion to 25 points at one point.

Brown ended the night 6-of-11 from the field, hitting both free-throw shots, and added five rebounds and three assists. Steele led UTD with seen rebounds while Hess ended with six assists and four steals, both game highs. The Comets were just 8-of-15 (53.3%) from the free-throw line and held a slight 51-47 rebounding advantage over Ozarks.

UTD returns to action Saturday afternoon for its second of three straight road games at rival Texas-Tyler. Game time is 1 p.m. in Tyler.
