Comets Battle Hardin-Simmons To Scoreless Draw

SOPHOMORE JOSEPH WEBER HELPED THE COMETS TO THEIR THIRD SHUTOUT OF THE SEASON.
Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (09.19.14) - The UT Dallas men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to five games Friday night as the Comets and Hardin-Simmons played to a scoreless draw in an pre-American Southwest Conference friendly at the UTD Soccer Field.

The Comets (now 3-1-2) picked up their second straight tie after earning three shutout victories following a season-opening loss at Birmingham-Southern last month. UTD will continue its short home stand Saturday night as the Comets host Mary Hardin-Baylor 7:30 p.m. Saturday in another non-conference match. HSU (now 1-1-1) will play Texas-Tyler at 5 p.m. Saturday.

In a very physical game from the start, the two teams began accumulating yellow cards over late portion of the contest. A total of eight cautions were given, five to Hardin-Simmons and three to the Comets. Six of the eight cards came either in the final 15 minutes of regulation or during one of the two overtime periods.

UTD amassed 11 shots in the defensive struggle, but managed just three shots on goal as Cowboy keeper Michael Vargas rejected every Comet scoring opportunity. UTD keeper Joseph Weber made two saves as the Cowboys had just eight shots on the night, two on goal.

The Comets had a chance to end the game in regulation as HSU collected one of its cards on a handball in the penalty box. However, Will Collins' shot to the lower right was rejected by Vargas with 7:40 on the clock in the second half and the scoring drought for both teams continued. HSU had an excellent chance to score minutes later, but goalkeeper Joseph Weber stopped a charge with a diving grab.

Travis White, Roman Rodriguez, Danny Meyer and Erick Reyes each finished with a team-high two shots.
