RICHARDSON, TX (01.22.15) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team recorded its widest margin of victory this season as the Comets snapped a two-game losing streak with a 81-55 home win over Texas-Tyler in American Southwest Conference play.
The Comets (now 11-5, 6-5 ASC) shot better than 50 percent for just the fourth time all season as
Rafael Farley led three UTD players in double figures with 23 points.
Matthew Medell finished with 13 points while
Kyle Coulter recorded his third "double-double" of the season with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
UTD topped 55 percent in the opening half as the Comets never trailed in the contest. The Comets quickly grabbed a double-digit lead as Farley hit the first of his five three-pointers to lift UTD to a 14-4 lead over the Patriots with 14:13 left in the half. UTD would cruise through the opening half before taking a 39-24 lead into the locker room.
The Comets continued to roll in the second half, extending their lead to more than 20 points just three minutes into the half as Medell hit a layup to lift the home team a 47-26 lead with 16:57 remaining. UTD would later use a 14-0 run to snag its largest lead of the night, 72-40, capped by a pair of
Caleb Banks free throws with 6:21 left.
Farley was 9-of-16 from the field, hitting 5-of-8 three-pointers, and added a pair of assists, a block and a steal. Banks, making his first collegiate start, finished with six points and a game-high six assists. All 16 Comets who dressed Thursday night appeared in the game with 12 different players scoring.
As a team, UTD hit 29-of-55 shots (52.7%) from the floor, shooting 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from three-point range, and hit 13-of-20 (65%) free throws. The Comets have now hit 10 or more three-pointers in 10 of 16 games this season. UTD dominated the boards against the Patriots, out-rebounding UTT, 47-21, collecting 15 offensive rebounds.
UT-Tyler fell to 1-16 overall and 0-12 in ASC play with the loss.
The Comets return to action Saturday afternoon as they host Ozarks. Game time is 3 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
